Merged Obama enters GZ Mosque debate

I wonder if any Roman Catholic churches have been shut down near kindergartens and pre-schools. You know, just to be on the safe side.

You might to read about how some convents were burnt down in the 1800's in the US....one in Boston being most notorious case.
In fact, if you want a direct parallel to the current outburst of bigotry, the Anti Catholic hysteria of the early 1800s in the US is a very good one.

Someone want to take up the challenge of explaining how anti-Islamic sentiment in the U.S. differs from anti-Jewish sentiment in pre-WWII Europe?

the Muslims did 9-11 and other terror attacks on the USA. therefore, anti-Muslim sentiment is acceptable.

:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

funny how Tim McVey was not a Muslim. Nor was the Atlanta Olympic bomber. Nor were the abortion clinic bombers.

Funny how Tim McVeigh isn't trying to build a meeting-hall across the street from his bomb site. Nor the Atlanta Olympic bomber.

I can only imagine the outcry from certain agonistes on this board if a Christian organization decided to build a church across the street from a bombed-out abortion clinic... "in order to promote dialog and understanding", of course.

I support Obama, but I am not sure it was that courageous. The people who are going to be upset by it are opposed to Obama anyway.

Taking a position opposed by 70% of the public goes against basic politics. The fact that he did it anyway is a major act of courage, considering that it's an election year where his side is losing and the other side is using fear to gin up votes.

um...I didn't realize Al Qaeda was one of the main backers of the Cordoba Initiative Mosque.

what more secret info have you acquired?

He and you are in the minority opinion. Nearly 70 percent of people feel an Islamic center near ground zero is disrespectful, even deliberately provocative.
Well then 70% of the country can cry moar or get off of their fat butts and change the constitution.

2 blocks = "across the street"?

How about you just claim they want to build a statue of Osama bin Laden directly on the WTC site? It's equally untrue and is even more melodramatic.

And Obama has had a major prolbem engergzing his party. I think this is partly an attempt to do it.

If the GOP takes over the house, I fully expect a few bills to basically restrict the rights of Muslims. Shades of "The Siege".
The GOP, by using bigotry, is playing with dynamite. I think they are going to find out that the nutjobs they are embracng are not going to be as easy to control and manage as they think.

If that were so, why wouldn't he use a much more popular issue with which to energize his party? Like a public option (70% support) or a jobs bill or announcing Elizabeth Warren as CFPA chief? Any one of those would accomplish the goal without stepping into a contentious issue like this and would boost himself with both his party and the general public. There is no upside to this other than doing what's empirically right and just. I don't think you've made your case on this point.

yes, they will try to pander to the bigots and extremists.

democracy tends to not survive once that road is driven down.

Better still, how about a synagogue?

You know, just to promote religious tolerance and all.

kind of a mute point, as there are no Jews or Baptists in Mecca.

either way, Obama should push Muslim states to become more tolerant of religious minorities, such as Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Iran, etc etc.

or, he could just follow in Bush II's footsteps and hold hands with the Saudi Royal family. :)

Hmmm.. I seem to remember a Christian organization doing something similar after one of their own murdered a doctor in Kansas.
