I can't pretend to speak for a movement of people (and I don't know how you can either) but I don't think the GOP is afraid of a confident Obama. I think a confident Obama who steamrolls through an unpopular massive program (if that's what the public thinks it is, and right now I'd say that's what they think) plays right into their hands.
Obama scores best when he is seen as transcending race and politics and divisions. When he's partisan he scores big time with the left, but that's not going to win him any elections.
