Montel Williams responds

[Off-topic]

You know, "spond" should be a word. I could even provide a definition:

Spond - v. - 1. to state, claim, do, or otherwise act in a way that will soon draw criticism or challenge, requiring you to respond; to speak or act in a controversal and provocative manner. Synonym: Troll, provoke.

I'm going to start using that one.

I hope you get/got a chance to watch this episode, RSL.. I'm curious if there are any discrepancies with her stories of her childhood. She didn't seem to mention the first time she saw Francine but she did mention seeing faces of people that later died or something like that. (Afraid I wasn't paying really close attention to be of any real use.)

This is just from memory, too, so might be a little off but I found this to be funny. It was an exchange that went like this: A woman had a photograph of her husband cooking, and the steam supposedly looked like a woman.

Woman: You can see her face, hair, sideburns (?), high collar from the 1800's [etc] ...
Montel: You can see all THAT?!
Woman: Well your producer did.

Oh and this bit pissed me off.. Montel, on audience members being sure they want the answer before asking, "[After the commercial:] Why the truth isn't always pretty." Truth? Truth?!

Here's another piece from today's show:

Sylvia said, "I'm the only one that went to a psychologist/psychiatrist and was tested and everything else. And my grandmother said to me, why are you doing that and I said well, we could be 300 years of schizophrenics and we don't know it. All the reports - I can show them to you - came back and said Sylvia's very normal, she's very outgoing, she doesn't need a secondary personality but she has something very paranormal happening.

At 71 years of age doing it for 53 years professionally, if I didn't have passion for it I would be dead by now. I really really love it. I mean everybody that knows me, seen me in concert or heard me on the phone, I've never lost my enthusiasm. When that day comes I'll stop."

Montel - "one of the things I love the most about working with Sylvia is that she always speaks her mind on it don't matter what. Take a look back to 1995."

Then he proceeds to talk about the emails he receives and says, "two times you've been on the show. Out of 300 letters we got in a couple of days, I had 20 people write in and one guy said, and I'll never forget this letter, Montel I'm never watching your show again. (I don't even have to have the letter in my hand). You had that woman Sylvia Browne on again and I can't believe a man like you, with your integrity would dare to have this woman on here and make us all think that she is for real. Why do you do this?"
Montel then looked at Sylvia and said, "what do you say to people like that Sylvia. Answer the question so I don't have to answer it anymore."

Sylvia's response, "kiss off".

So I presume Montel's response to Lt. Colonel Hal Bidlack is likewise - KISS OFF!

Ugh, Montel Sickens me. I think we need a new contest. Can we please start making LOLSIKIKZ? I'd do it myself but I don't have any photoediting programs.

(emphasis added) RSL, sounds like Sylvia's offering to provide reports of psychiatrists documenting that she has "something very paranormal happening." No doubt she'll send you copies quickly upon request.

(Of course, it probably wouldn't be too hard to find a psychiatrist dishonest enough to say that. But I'm betting Sylvia didn't make that effort and is just blowing smoke.)

indeed...Robert, this claim may also be worth another column. Who were these psychiatrists? What tests did they run? Were they peer reviewed? Could Sylvia provide access to the psychiatrist and tests? It's her claim...I foresee that she will be unable to back it up.

Remind me never to be drinking soda while reading RSL's responses.... I now have quite a mess to clean up as I laughed and spewed it across the room!
Sorry! :)

I hope you get/got a chance to watch this episode, RSL..
I'm hoping my usual source has taped it for me. If not, I will order a copy.

Probably the story she tells of seeing her great-grandmothers' faces "run like melting wax" when she was a child (five years old, if I recall). Both of them (according to the story) died within weeks.

This is just from memory, too, so might be a little off but I found this to be funny. It was an exchange that went like this: A woman had a photograph of her husband cooking, and the steam supposedly looked like a woman.
And what did Browne have to say about all the picture?

Actually, there is an article in the works about this "I come from a 300-year line of psychics" claim.

Montel then looked at Sylvia and said, "what do you say to people like that Sylvia. Answer the question so I don't have to answer it anymore."

Sylvia's response, "kiss off".
Quite an eloquent, not to mention spiritual, rebuttal.

I will do so.

I think what she is referring to is a psychiatrist she saw when she was married to Gary Dufresne, and it had nothing to do with "psychic powers."

And what did Browne have to say about all the picture?

I'm afraid I was tuning out (figuratively) at that point. The TV was on, but I was envisioning Montel's producer prepping the woman with what to say, sprinkled with the tale of Eeney's trip and Ms. Robbin's segment and was just thinking to myself how I loathe Montel.

Sadly I would have defended the woman years ago, but after waking up, it only serves to deepen the dissapointment I feel towards Sylvia and her lackies. It seem Montel is not willing to simply stop having her on! After all her bombs, he still continues to support this fraudulent woman's efforts to exploit people. It is really pathetic!

Then he proceeds to talk about the emails he receives and says, "two times you've been on the show. Why on earth would Montel let Sylvia answer for him (unless, of course, he were, let's say for instance, a disgrace to the US Navy, and the military code of honor he occasionally likes to spout)?

As for Hal, I didn't always agree with him, but I felt his intentions were good regarding this forum. I'd shake his hand if I ever get the chance to meet him. I think he has always retained his honor.

Montel can kiss my tush. The only reason I tuned in his show at all was to catch Sylvia in lies. I won't bother anymore, since Montel apparently can't change his mind, regardless of the evidence.

Another "Sylvia Browne Wednesday" viewer just went "poof", Montel!

lol John Edward?? He is probably waiting tables at your nearest T.G.I Fridays!!
No, even assuming he had fallen from grace with his fans, and squandered his millions, he would be back to teaching ballroom dancing. In fact, I am surprised he hasn't turned up on Dancing With the Stars.

Why on earth would Montel let Sylvia answer for him (unless, of course, he were, let's say for instance, a disgrace to the US Navy, and the military code of honor he occasionally likes to spout)?
Yet another good question.

I believe today's show was in response to the letters Montel has received about Sylvia Browne.
It certainly was. It's typically hilarious (although mixed with misanthropy, a tart combination) to see these public attempts to avoid being straight. Perhaps Montel has been following White House apologetics:

Damage Control Phase I: Insinuate that Sylvia, for some reason that shouldn't be elaborated on, will no longer be on national television making bad guesses at others expense and more importantly, selling these services for an obscene fee.

Damage Control Phase II: Say she's always welcome on the show because she's an endearing human being, despite the former being obvious.

She has made this claim before, either on Montel or Larry King, I forget which, but probably the former.

She was asked about the "300 years of psychics" and stated that she was the only one who got herself tested early on to make sure she had her ability for real and wasn't nuts.

Yes, that's right: Sylvia Browne claims to have undergone scientific testing for psychic powers and to have gotten a positive result.

She'd probably easily back out of this, though, because she says it in a way that could mean she was tested positive for psychic powers or could mean she had undergone psychiatric evaluation to prove she wasn't crazy or both.

I used to like and trust Montel. Now I feel nothing but comtempt for him. The fact that he continues to endorse and promote her is sickening enough but that he allows her to say "kiss off" when people ask good questions and show a little critical thought is not only rude but reprehensible. What an uncaring *****.
I wish he had to deal with all the anguished people he helped Sylvia lie to and give false hope to. That may show him the light. Or maybe not. :(

I completely agree with you. When I began watching Montel, it had nothing to do with Sylvia Browne. In fact, I didn't even know who she was all those years ago. I found him to be a compassionate man who treated his guests well and seemed to have empathy and integrity. He is not the same Montel he used to be and I have stopped watching his show - except for Wednesday - and then only to see what SB is going to do to put her foot further into her mouth.

It's sad to come to the realization that he sold out and exchanged his integrity for money.

Bingo for me, too. I didn't know who she was until I saw her on Montel years ago, either. He turned me on to her because I always had believed him to be compassionate and believable. I am so disappointed in him now.
Now I think he is either a complete heartless sellout or else he is in too deep and too ashamed to admit it and his pride won't let him back down and dump her. Either way he has lost any honour he once possessed, IMO.
