We started 12-hour shifts Sunday. No fun. I'm due to work till 6. All sorts of times floating around for the announcement... I've heard 5, 7... Rumors all.

We had a group on campus earlier handing out inflammatory flyers... they left before we could advise them of the "no soliciting" policy.

It seems odd that they (whoever makes the decision of when to make the announcement) would choose to do so late in the day so close to nighttime since that gives an advantage to those who would seek to cause civil unrest in response to the announcement.

If the purpose is to allow law enforcement and the MNG to prepare for potential civil unrest then why not hold off for a day and make the announcement earlier in the day on Tuesday?

It lets everyone get home and prepare.

Seems like if they indicted Wilson, there would be no need to wait to announce it...

It could be a voluntary manslaughter charge rather than murder, which might still cause problems.

I think there is a tactical advantage in not giving time for large numbers of people to flow into the area before nightfall. The police have made their preparations. There will be a curfew set if things get out-of-hand and this time I think (hope) that those in charge better understand that the fire have to be put out (figuratively and literally) as soon as they are started.

I suppose that's true. Anything less than murder will probably get the fires going.

Some of the announcements just feel like preps for a "no bill" announcement.

UPDATE 3:07 p.m.: Nixon's office has released the following statement:

They will be calling for peace and discussing preparations to protect the public and free speech, in anticipation of the announcement of the grand jury decision.

The statement confirms that the news conference will begin at UMSL at 5:30 p.m. today.

Be safe out there, brother.

"Family of Michael Brown says it is requesting 4-and-a-half-minute period of silence in Ferguson before protests." <--- From CNN

Gotta love how the family accepts protests as a given.
Why not ask for "civility"?
