kurious_kathy explain this.

"kedeshah" is the word used for a promiscuous woman, and "kadesh" is the word used for promiscuous man. It seems that Jewish sources tend to translate it this way, whereas Christian sources seem to use the translation "temple prostitutes."

Well this Jewish source doesn't seem to agree with you..

Apropos of nothing in particular, as a child I was exhorted to find "God." After all I'd been told about this fabulous creature/thing/being, I figured he/she/it stood a better chance of finding me.

I've seen that translation also, although I'm not sure how accurate it is since the Hebrew uses the male and female forms of the same word (I'm not sure how they could have two different meanings). But the fact that there are three different interpretations only makes my point, that translations and interpretations are far from definitive, even among literalists.

The same site also says here:

Sexual enjoyment (whether involving intercourse or mere hand holding) is permissible for Jews only within the context of marriage.

BTW, the same site you cite above also says here:

In all cases, the Talmud specifies that a woman can be acquired only with her consent, and not without it.

Of course not!

You have to remember, this is Israel under the Torah. It is a life led under Force and Law, rather than a life led under Spirit and Compassion. Sort of like California in the 21st Century.

My mother-in-law lives in California. It is not a place I am likely to visit.

Just a little digression here; does that mean you support the rape and killing of the less than innocent?

Pedant. I was asking how kathy was going to justify God's decision to do so, not advocating the raping and killing of innocents.

I'm not talking about the contemporary Jewish view on promiscuity.
I challenged you to show that Jewish male promiscuity was frowned upon by God/Jewish law in the context of the OT.

I don't see where you have done that.. Your best shot seems to be talking about prostitutes. At least that seems to be the consensus of most scholars..

Why do I suspect, if I came to you with an opinion of a Bible verse, which all the mainstream translations disagreed with, you'd be all over me..

You really need to come up with something else or give this one up..

I
do not feel the need to answer this question or even try to justify why God allows anything. I myself am a New Testement Believer.
Many here get so hung up on Old Testament philosophy they miss the whole point. And I'm not stating there aren't things to learn from the Old Testament.. many lessons in the word of God for those who are spirit filled.
You might be interested in looking up some of Ray Vander Lann's work that is excellent. He's a historian and Bible teacher that I think is very good.

What a waste of a job.

Being a historian about a fictional book.

Enough to make a grown man cry....

:(

Once again, this is all basically saying we shouldn't have sex before we are married because God says so! Why should we listen to him? If these rules were obviously important, like "Thou shalt not put thy head in yonder lava", that I can understand. But what you are saying is just stupid, I'm sorry. "Thou shalt not" have sex before you are married. Why not?
When my marriage was turned around is when I started believing God's word is true. He made me see the truth in His word...and he gave me the ability and strength to turn back around and get on a better path.
Wide is the path that leads to destruction....narrow is the path that leads us home! I personally care about where I will spend eternity.

That is convenient. So you are admitting that either parts of the bible are false, or that you cherrypick what to believe.

Fine, you want new testament? Tell me why Jesus' bloodline is listed through Joseph when he was born to a virgin, and why the two accounts of his lineage to King David are different.

ETA: Your logical fallacies this time are:

Shifted burden of proof, appeal to authority.

You care about where you're buried?

Well, I don't know why, I guess it doesn't matter, but I sort of don't like the idea that my bones will end up in a sewage system or such. Silly, but there you go. :)

Bah. You're dead.

When I die, I wish to be made into soup and fed to Kevin Trudeau.

Hmmm... there's a thought. Maybe they could make me into some sort of incredibly poisonous soup and feed a little bit of me to every politician in the world. I could die happy with that possibility.

Old Testament philosophy ? Oh, like genocide and stuff ?

So, you are saying God changed somewhere between the old and the new testament ?

That doesn't sound like the God most Christians believe in.. I thought he was un-changing ..

Oh, and if you aren't going to answer questions, why don't you just leave..

It just shows you are a liar when you say you are not preaching.

Kathy:

Please explain to me why Jesus' lineage is listed through his father, when Mary was a virgin, and also please explain why the two lineages listed for him are differing.

Try holding your breath. I'm sure this will ensure you get a prompt answer!

I've never got an answer to any of my questions so why the hell should you? ;)
