Just got a Kindle.

I've downloaded a couple of the Vook things as well - will have a look tonight.

Well that didn't take long...

Just checked out a couple of the Vook things. My verdict: don't waste your time. I looked at the Ancient Art History and History of Jazz titles. They consist only of minimal text; there are no videos or links -- the Art History didn't even have pictures. As for the text, you'd get more info from a Wikipedia article.

Seriously, they were so short that it didn't take me long at all to skim through both titles.

Has anyone tried Lendle?

This site was mentioned in the LA Times article about libraries and Kindle linked to about a page ago.

Apparently, you can lend books to people for a 14 day period. Looks interesting and cheap!

I love my new Kindle. I think I've read more books in the last 3 weeks I've had it than I have in the last 3 years.

I signed up for Lendle today. The main drawbacks I can see right away are that certain books are not lendable. Also, even if a book is lendable, there is a limit to how many people can request the title at one time, and there is no waitlist feature. Also, a large percentage of the books available seem to be juvenile fiction.

Still a nice idea and glad to see it. It's similar to the digital lending feature many libraries are implementing.

i've had my kindle for a little over a day now and i freaking love it. it's got me reading again. many thanks to whoever suggested calibre, too.

i wish i had bought it when i first thought about it instead of waffling back and forth for months.

This is so annoying. I'm trying to read an paper magazine (free inquiry, if it matters), and every firging column and op-ed has a mandatory page jump, including the letters. I just want to read what I'm reading, not flip around looking for pages, then try to remember where I was and backtrack. Kindle for the win!

Ooohh, I've always hated that about magazines. I've heard there's a marketing reason behind it (memory fails as to what exactly the reason is), but I've always found it just plain annoying.

I have just downloaded the Rock and roll one. Will look when I get home.
I downloaded a few, including this one, and I've just had a look at it. I think they're a waste of time. Just one example, punk doesn't get mentioned until the section on the 80s, and there is no mention of the Sex Pistols, Clash or in fact any British punk band.

Amazon are now selling more Kindle titles than all types of books put together.

Amazon began selling hardcover and paperback books in July 1995. Twelve years later in November 2007, Amazon introduced the revolutionary Kindle and began selling Kindle books. By July 2010, Kindle book sales had surpassed hardcover book sales, and six months later, Kindle books overtook paperback books to become the most popular format on Amazon.com. Today, less than four years after introducing Kindle books, Amazon.com customers are now purchasing more Kindle books than all print books - hardcover and paperback - combined.
