• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

Just got a Kindle.

My kindle is starting to show some problems. At first it started forgetting which page was last read in a book, now it forgets which book was last read.

I've noticed the first problem cropping up with dead tree books over the last few years. I suppose it's only a matter of time before I get the second one as well.

Interesting point on the 99p books thanks. I've not considered looking at these in the past, rather only full price or free.

You can sign up to get an email with the Daily Deal, though I can't find the link for that at the moment.

I've got quite a backlog of books from this, I have to be very strict with myself now when I look at the message each day. :)

Oops, while looking for the link, I see there's a selection of crime novels by LJ Sellers for 99p (something else they do from time to time, several books by one author reduced; I got 10 of the George Gently books like that). Must sit on my hands...

I got a Kindle Fire given to me for Christmas and I love it! I've already bought a couple of dozen books (including the Vonnegut set) as well as various apps. I could never afford to buy that many new print books.
I read somewhere that Amazon was selling the Fire at almost cost price, figuring that they'd be making their money from stuff that people will buy from the Amazon store linked to it. That's certainly working with me....

Latest Bargain: The complete Barsoom novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs for Three Bucks.
The first six are available for free, but the last five are still in copyright. Anyway, the books are all properly formatted with links to the individual chapters (the formmating for most free books is minimal). Good Deal.

I downloaded the Kindle app for my iPad yesterday. Now I have to learn how to load books into it. There doesn't seem to be a link from the app to the Amazon store.

They had to remove it because Apple insist on a cut of in-app purchases. So you have to buy books via Safari and send them to your Kindle on IPad.

I just noticed that Amazon (US) has Lamb by Christopher Moore for $1.99. Unclear if that's a daily thing that will expire soon, or one of this month's deals, but I thought this crowd might be interested.

Wow, what a stupid complaint:

Wouldn't any agreement they make with Amazon, and not with these independents, mean that "the vast majority of readers who wish to read an e-book published by the Big Six will purchase the e-book from Amazon"? The issue of DRM is completely besides the point!

I believe it's part of the current conflict within the book trade regarding the Amazon/Adobe/Apple oligopoly. The Big Six now know that they've given the DRM keys to Amazon, thus locking their customers into a vertical silo, and Amazon were now free to squeeze *them* for deeper discounts.
Though there are signs of movement, such as Macmilan dropping the requirement for DRM on genre fiction last year. They seen to have (finally) figured out that piracy is far less of a threat to their long-term future than being bent over a barrel by Amazon.

Article about Amazon:

Note - This is the Daily Mail. The paper that has earned the dubious distinction of becoming a verb. To be "Daily Mailed" is to have the facts distorted, twisted, or ignored to a degree that would make even other news media wince.

Read with care.

I know Rugeley quite well (irregular visitor over 40 years), a town that has been blighted by misfortune more than many places over the years.

A mostly likeable bunch of folks.

The arrival of Amazon would most certainly have been welcomed by many and from what I see there are definite signs of improvement in the town centre since its arrival (less closed shops - new businesses - cleaner - busier etc.) but that's only the opinion of a casual observer.

Probably should have just posted that. :)

That article seemed too reasonable for the daily fail, no blame on immigrants, nothing causing/curing cancer. Then I read the bit near the end - it's an extract from an FT article!

I was editing as you typed. :D

It's still a bit warped on FT. The FT comments make an interesting read and most can spell and use grammar proper like what I does.

Just thought I'd mention there's been a major update of the Kindle (or at least the Kindle Touch) and a cool new feature they've added is that instead of displaying your "location" (which is a numerically assigned position within the text that basically means nothing) your Kindle can also alternatively display reading time to the end of the current chapter or reading time to the end of the book (and when you activate the menu it displays all three). I gave it a test last night and it worked quite nicely on the book I was reading. It adjusts to your reading speed.

Just bought my Third Kindle:A Kindle Fire HD. I admit I am buying it because it is a great Comic book reader. Several Comic Readers are availble on the Amazon Store (programs for reading CBR/CZR files, which is how most E Comic Books are formatted). I have about 25 DVD Roms of comics and will really got to town on them now.....
