Just got a Kindle.

I've sent nice messages to Mrs. Timbo's Kindle at her free.kindle.com email address. I create a Word doc with the message and then email it.

I shamelessly stole the idea from someone else on the Amazon Kindle board and told her it was my idea. She doesn't read this forum or Amazon's.

Thanks. :) I'm going to try to forget about it so it's a surprise when it arrives.

I'm trying to not to get too excited now, the Oberon case is in the building, just waiting for it to be delivered either to my desk or my post tray...

It did arrive :)

I did have to pay VAT and a customs charge, so it ended up a lot more expensive than the Amazon cover with a light, but I think it's gorgeous. It does add weight to the Kindle, but I haven't found that to be a problem yet (and you can always pop the Kindle out if it becomes one). In fact, I find it easier to hold and operate one-handed with the extra bulk. The light slips into the pocket behind the Kindle and stays very securely in place when being used. (There isn't room to store the light in the case, but I generally only use the light in bed.)

They just announced an ad-supported WiFi Kindle for $114.

I see that.

I don't think the price difference between that one and the $139 model is large enough. They should have broken the $100 barrier. That would sell a bunch more.

Oh that's cool.

Looks mouldy to me...

(not at all jealous)

You know what else has mold? Grapes! especially sour ones :p

Zooterkin, that's a lovely case!

:)

Thanks, all; it looks even better in real life, the pictures don't do it justice, and it's very tactile, too, I just want to carry it around all the time. I do appreciate that it may not be to everyone's taste, but it works for me.

Interesting; looks like it's US-only for the moment, and the ads are only on the screen saver and at the bottom of the screen when reading, so supposedly not too intrusive.

Here is my current case.

I know you are all jealous.

My understanding is that they are at the bottom of your homepage rather than the bottom of the screen when you are reading a book.

You're right, I missed the word 'home' when reading. :)
Special offers and sponsored screensavers display on the Kindle screensaver and on the bottom of the home screen—they don't interrupt reading.

Kindle with Special Offers & Sponsored Screensavers is only available in the U.S.

Kindles (and the other big eInk readers like Nook) are already loss leaders intended to sell digital books. Expecting them to be much cheaper than they already are is probably unrealistic. For example, a look at Newegg finds that the Sony eInk reader sells for $180 and doesn't match up with the Kindle 3 on technical specifications. Granted, Sony isn't known for great bargains, but one would think they'd try harder to compete if they could.

Kindles are magic!

I'd forgotten I'd pre-ordered a book, when I got up yesterday the book was there on my Home page!!!!!

I'm thinking I'll have to get another Kindle so I can lend books to folk and I might get the 3G version as I've got so used to being able to look something up or read a book description when I was waiting for my car's MOT it was quite a shock when I couldn't do that on my WiFi only model!
