Just got a Kindle.

Amazon has an option where you can opt out of emails. I had all the categories (including kindle) ticked. I changed this to say 'send no e-mails.' Immediately Amazon sent me an email to say I had changed my options:D.

I don’t think this is it however. I am thinking it may be something in Gmail. I don't use the account to send e-mails I may have a confirmation box ticked that means it sends me an email to say the sending was successful. I will check when I get home.

Has anyone replaced their charger? Mine is problematic and a recommendation of something sturdy woule be nice.

I don't have anything specific to recommend, but it's just a standard micro-USB charger, there are probably dozens on e-bay. I've already used the cable that came with the Kindle (both with the charger and plugged into the USB of a laptop), a phone charger and a Bluetooth headset charger. All of them worked fine.

I just ordered a Kindle 3 last week. It's due to arrive today. Prior to this, I'd been using an ancient laptop to read e-books.

Partially lazy and partially techno-incompetent. Where are these options located?

I don't get an email of any kind - the periodicals just appear in my home menu. Show me your settings and I'll show you mine!

I don't get any email either and I have a couple of periodicals set up in Calibre. I didn't know there was an option to have it send an email.

As for the charger cord issue, I've gotten one from my cell phone provider. It's a standard micro (not mini) usb one.

Which ones would you like to see? Amazon, kindle, calibre or Gmail?

I set a Gmail rule to archive the notification and I didn't get a notification when the Guardian, Telegraph and Indie arrived this morning

I'm not getting notification email from anyone and I've just checked and I can't find a setting in the news download options in Calibre that sends an email. Can you copy the notification email here?

Ok done that and working well. Is there any way to stop calibre/kindle sending me an email to tell me that it has sent the downloads?

Are you referring to the emails with the subject "Your Amazon Kindle document is here"?

Where are you getting those? That's the email that calibre sends to Amazon for them to deliver the content to your Kindle.

It'll be in Gmail's Sent Mail folder, but you shouldn't be receiving that email...

Are you seeing that email in your Inbox or your Sent Mail folder? I'm not sure why it would be in your Inbox.

I get emails with the subject "Your Amazon Kindle document is here"

From the Kindle guide:

For Kindle models that include 3G, you can avoid 3G delivery fees for the personal document service by addressing the e-mail so that the second part of your Kindle e-mail address is @free.kindle.com. The document will be delivered to your Kindle when your Kindle is connected via Wi-Fi and it will also be e-mailed to your Amazon e-mail address. If Wi-Fi is not available, you can transfer the personal document to your Kindle's documents folder by connecting your Kindle to your computer.

I don't think there is a way to have it not be sent to your email account. You'll probably need to set up a filter in Gmail to avoid those emails. (ETA: I see you've already done this.)

I only have the WiFi version. Didn't see the point of 3G. I am unlikely to download a book from anywhere but home.

If you only have the WiFi version, you can change the address to which Calibre is sending documents to Lothian@kindle.com, instead of Lothian@free.kindle.com.

The free address is only to avoid having the documents sent via 3G, and having to pay for it.

If you use the @kindle.com address, I think you will not get those emails from Amazon.

Thanks I will give that a go.
