Not just arbitary either. A bit of testing leads me to consider that at least 5 out of every 6 three digit numbers can be reduced to either 7, 9, 11 or a multiple of these numbers. If we add more numbers and take it further, I suspect that almost any number can be made to work.

For instance, Your post is number 7401698.

7 + 4 + 0 + 1 + 6 + 98 = 116
1 * (1 + 6) = 7

or perhaps...

7 + 4 + 0 + 1 + 9 + 8 = 35 = 5 x 7

or

74 + 0 + 1 + 6 + 9 + 8 = 98
9 + 8 = 17
1 * 7 = 7

or

740 + 16 + 98 = 854
8 + 5 + 4 = 17
1 * 7 = 7

and even better....

74 + 0 - 16 + 98 = 156
1 * 5 + 6 = 11!

I always wonder how old people are who say this, and where they're from.

I presume if you're American (sorry) and the only experience of terrorism in your lifetime is essentially 9/11, and given the number of CTs floating around it there may be an excuse.

But if you're European, and if you've live through the IRA, INLA, UVF, ETA, Black September, Red Army Faction, Baader Meinhof, etc, etc., then there's really no excuse for this nonsense.
