John McCain Diagnosed With Brain Cancer

Yeah, even I think the praise has gone a bit too far. I think the media (not-FOX) is just happy to report on something "not Trump" for a while.

And I'm sure Trump appreciates the distraction from all those singing canaries last week. Or rather anyone else would, but he's too childish to ever count a lack of attention as a benefit.

Jesus Christ you ******* would argue over a plate of rice pudding if you thought it was score points for your side.

If you don't think McCain deserves to be praised that's one thing, but whether or not the main deserved to be praised isn't political point scoring.

Oh I'm sorry I forgot everything is an appropriate topic for political point scoring.

Your middle sentence seems to contradict the rest of your post. No, I don't think McCain deserves as much praise as he's getting. The reality of his actions was quite different from the calculated image he successfully projected, and that tarnished his own party. The blind hagiography going on here is inaccurate. I'd be saying the same if he had been a Democrat because I'm not trying to 'score points'. By all means, praise him for his good points. But don't fall into the trap of believing the myth.

Seriously? I understand the cultural taboo on speaking ill of the dead, but all this lionization is going to far. 'Honor and integrity'? 'Keating Five'. Have we really reached the stage where corruption and theft don't even register?

Is it true he was also committing a war crime when he was shot down? Doesn't matter -- he was only following orders.

I think you are incorrect. I believe the last thing Trump wants is to lose attention. And here we are, giving it to him in a thread about McCain. I believe he would be pleased, if he cared about this place at all.

I apologize for bringing up Trump. As we all know, Senator McCain wasn't involved in politics so it's beyond the pale to suggest his death would have any political effects.

Stop telling people what they can and can’t discuss! Stop it! Don’t post it!

Anyway, what with me not living in the US, I haven’t heard that much about John McCain’s death. But I do know plenty about how such deaths result in over-the-top adulation (princess Diana, anyone?) and a convenient amnesia about the departed’s less noble acts. That Strom Thurmond, what a guy! Had a lot of spunk in him, that’s for sure! Did you know he had a record filibuster like that Mr Smith Goes to Washington! The ladies loved him too! Had principles and stuck by them!

It’s perfectly fair game to question whether McCain’s legacy is being portrayed correctly, whether it is too hagiographic, and presumably even whether news outlets are being influenced by political point-scoring themselves such as how they are reporting Trump’s (non-)reaction.

So yeah, it is a shame when people die of debilitating diseases. I’m sorry for him and his family about that. He had some political views I agree with, although who really needs to get credit for being against torture? He probably could have been in favour of a Martin Luther King Day earlier than he was, particularly as his state ends with the dubious distinction of - I think - the only state not to have one at one stage. He shouldn’t have used the word “gooks” regardless of his treatment in Vietnam (they weren’t thrilled with what he was doing after all), and yes he was involved in corruption before being caught and being against it (no prizes for the latter, IMO!)

If you don't like it ignore me. That's the answer to everything.

Ignoring me is exactly as easy for you as ignoring them is for me.

The story on McCain I saw this morning brought up the Keeting issue, but it was pretty well blunted by McCain's self deprecating tone that he often used. They didn't talk much about his voting record or what his legislative legacy was, but they did talk about how even his opponents liked him and that he often had opponents in his own party when working on issues like immigration.

Sure, the spin is very positive right after his death, but can you think of another GOP senator who would be as universally liked?

Trump didn’t like McCain because McCain served honorably in Vietnam while Trump ran away like a stinking coward.

I have that option, but maybe I don’t want to use it! It’s not the answer to everything, you see! It’s not the answer to the question, “who was the senator who died this week who was part of the Keating Five?”

Jesus, man! Didn’t you spot the intentional irony of my post by telling you to stop telling people what to post!?

That seems a self-evident fact, what's to address?

Therefore the point he "appreciates the distraction from all those singing canaries last week" is probably not accurate. I do think he appreciates the fact that the killer of that girl in Iowa was apparently an illegal immigrant. That gives him more fuel for the burning crosses that energize his base, while shifting focus away from his Teapot Dome boiling over.

McCain is a mixed bag. There are things that he did that were dishonest and dishonorable. I can point to many horrible things he said and did. But there definitely was a flip side. A very honorable side. He loved the country and the principles of democracy.

He took both calculating and manipulating stands but he also took courageous stands. Given that there are only a few Republican politicians anymore with even a hint of courage or principles, he stands out as a beacon.
