It's time for a Ted Cruz thread.

He must be living in an alternate dimension, because we haven't been ruled by free-market libertarians for the last three decades. If we had, the regulatory burden of the state would have decreased, not increased as it has. Whether you think that's a good thing or a bad thing is irrelevant: he's completely delusional about what has happened.

So I suppose that 1999 repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act was rational idea to free up the free-market to do all the good things it did to almost destroy the World? Someone is living in an Alternate Universe.

I didn't say it was a good idea. But if you think that one big-business corporate-friendly act constitutes libertarianism, you really don't understand what the word means.

We are not ruled by libertarians, and have not been at any point within the past 30 years. We frequently get corporatists in power, but that's not at all the same thing.

Agreed. We're ruled in many states by libertarian-wannabees - people who wuss out before being able to go Full Metal Ayn Rand on the concept of the free market.

They yell about "free enterprise", but they bow before the corporate state every chance they get.

Rafael Cruz is a low life piece of trash who is by far the worst member of the US Senate (besides maybe Tom Cotton). He would easily be the most extreme right wing President we've ever had.

If the American people are retarded enough to put him in the White House, we better hope he is a conman rather than a true believer.

I find the conman possibility orders of magnitudes more frightening than true believerism. I'm not sure even Reagan was actually a social darwinist. Ted Cruz very well might be.

If JFK had said "I'm a Catholic first and an American second" he never would have been elected. How the times have changed.

Steve S

Perhaps not. If today a candidate said "I am a Catholic first and American second," he might not get elected. There is a strange class of Christian fundamentalists who believe that Catholics are not Christians, they are idolaters who worships statues of the saints and statues of Mary. [see Jack Chick tracts for more information]

In case anyone's confused, the candidate's full name is Rafael Edward Cruz. He no doubt uses "Ted" to distinguish himself from his father, also Rafael.

Iowa Republican Governor Branstad called for Iowans to defeat Cruz based on his support for big oil and opposition to renewable energy such as ethanol and wind. The opposition of the Governor is one thing, but being exposed as bad for corn and wind is not going to sit well with Iowa’s rural conservatives. The latest polls show Trump has closed with gap to be tied with Cruz, or even ahead by 11 points. Branstad may have just handed Iowa to Trump.

And corn is, of course, a pretty crappy way of producing ethanol. Sugar cane is only grown in three or four states and doesn't have the clout of the corn lobby. And ADM isn't in the sugar business.

Meh.

Eighteen-year-olds say stupid things every hour. And they say twice as many stupid things if you ask them about the future. He was clowning around and ended up sounding like an ass. Nothing worth noting.

Disclaimer: I think Cruz is a dangerous man who could set back the country by many years. I just don't think him trying to be funny as a teenager is a sign of anything.

I had to stop that to get the headphones on and unfortunately did so at a moment when he looked spookily like David Tennant. I'm trying to get that out of my mind. Other than that, his aspirations haven't really changed.

In other news, he says that unlike Trump, HE wouldn't shoot anyone in Times Square. But he hangs out with people who want to execute gays every chance he gets.
