Split Thread Is the Jan 6th committee too partisan?

The problem for Warp is that he cannot point to anything dishonest or misleading about what the January 6th committee is presenting to the public.

I am not claiming they are being dishonest or misleading. I am just claiming it is a highly partisan committee. As I say, maybe it will turn out to be the most virtuous one ever created.

They could certainly present all facts. But that doesn't mean they will present all of the facts, or present them in a way that isn't politically slanted.

Let's let the results speak for themselves.

Two outcasts who clearly have an axe to grind. Come on.

Two outcasts, you say? When exactly did they become outcasts? Was it perhaps when they joined the committee?

And, again, when your definition of a "highly partisan" committee runs the gamut of political views in Congress, it is impossible to have a committe that is not partisan. When all Republicans, all Democrats, or a mix of the two are all "highly partisan", there is no way to be non-partisan.

They're only outcasts because of the (correct) position they took on January 6th and their subsequent involvement in this investigation, and the only axe they have to grind is exclusively reserved for seeing those responsible for January 6th held accountable.

As a matter of fact, their positions mirror the ones you've expressed in this thread.

Weird that you criticize them as outcasts with an axe to grind when you claim to agree with them.

Great, then what's the problem?

Hey I just noticed we're back to only have one conservative on the board yet again.

Well, apparently the problem is that a lot of people can't simply admit that the committee is highly partisan. All of this debate stems from that.

Amazingly.

Please explain how we could have a non-partisan committee under your odd definition of partisan.

...and what does "two outcasts with an axe to grind" mean in this context?

It means two members of the Repugnican Party who have the integrity to...

- not be invested in The Fat Orange Turd's "Big Lie"
- not parrot the Repugnican talking points that the Jan 6 insurrection was "just a tourist visit" and "legitimate political discourse"
- not let the truth about who was behind the Jan 6 insurrection be covered up
- not let those who broke the law escape punishment!

So two people showing honesty, integrity, and a willingness to uphold the law and the Constitution. Yep, I can see how that would make them outcasts in the Repugnican Party!

Yes. All the debate stems from you picking one arbitrary non-issue and pretending it means anything and expecting the rest of us to not see through your act.

Why should anyone admit to something that isn't true?

You are entitled to your own opinions Warp, but you are not entitled to your own facts!

"Highly partisan" means that the investigation is somehow unfair. Not only have you failed to establish that the investigation is unfair, you even admitted that it probably isn't.

So again, what's the problem?

The Republicans declined to participate. That's just the right taking one of the most dangerous moments in US history any playing silly politics with it.

The opportunity there to participate, so it wasn't partisan, at least on the Democrat side, this is Republicans being partisan then making that the center of their defense.

Kevin McCarthy made the decision not to allow Republicans to serve on the committee after Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected two of the five Repubicans selected, Reps. Jim Jordan and Jim Banks. Pelosi rejected them on solid grounds. Jordan could possibly have been subpoenaed to testify. Both were trump allies who were supporters of decertifying the election results. A "senior Republican" said at the time that Pelosi's move was a "gift" to Republicans because they never wanted to take part in the hearing and, if they were on the committee, would be forced to confront complicated questions over trump's role in January 6. McCarthy made it clear, he wanted members who would protect trump. If he couldn't get that his Plan B was to have NO Republicans on the committee so he could claim it was all a partisan witch hunt.

Republicans Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger agreed to serve and thus became pariahs in their own party. Are they outcasts with an axe to grind? I doubt that's the way history will judge them.

I repeat. I've been reading about events in Ukraine since Russia invaded. This type of propaganda and spin seem very familiar. The pro-Russian Ukraine official insisting to a Western journalist that reports of Russian attacks on his city were lies, while ongoing shelling was visible through, and rattling, this official's office windows.

Birds of a feather... ;)

Well at least you aren't denying the partisan nature of the committee. Which is more than I can say for most of your forum compatriots.

No one is denying that the investigation is led by Democrats. They control Congress, and that’s how that works. No one is denying that the committee is majority Democrats. Republicans chose not to participate beyond the two members already on the committee (other than Republicans who are potentially culpable for the events of January 6th, and therefore shouldn’t be allowed on the committee). That’s not the fault of the Democrats.

But we’ve already agreed that doesn’t make the investigation unfair.

So what’s the problem?

Well, good on you for also admitting that it is a highly partisan committee.

I guess we will see if there is a problem, won't we?
