Split Thread Is the Jan 6th committee too partisan?

Mom: Stephanie, I will not allow you to go on a date with Daryl.
Stephanie: Why not?
Mom: Because he's left-handed!
Stephanie: What's the problem with him being left-handed?
Mom: The problem is that we cannot acknowledge that he is left-handed!

Ahem: highly left-handed!

No doubt you believe this. So wonderfully balanced, of course. I mean, I can't imagine a less partisan committee, tbh.

Seriously? No need to answer, as you have floated this before.

ETA: I think we can put our debate to bed at this point. It is just revisiting the same tired points.

This isn't a debate. For a debate to take place, both sides have to actually offer coherent arguments.

You haven't done that.

All you have done is repeatedly insist that the investigation is "partisan", while denying that it's all the things that define "partisan".

But it is not what we would generally characterize as being legitimately bipartisan.

Why not a vote of 1000 Masters to one Slave, and we call that a bipartisan vote, too? I mean, after all, it fits the definition you have provided, right?

I think we have also arrived at the end of the road in this discussion.

Case in point regarding your incoherent arguments.

I can't believe that you actually need this explained to you, but the inherent and extreme power imbalance between a slave and master makes this about the dumbest analogy possible, and it reeks of the Conservative Persecution Complex that so obviously infects your whole point of view.

I heard a claim this morning that, one of the interesting aspects of the committee hearings so far is that it has all been republicans. Liz Cheney (republican) has been leading the way, and all the witnesses who have been testifying, and not painting Trump in a favorable light, have been republican.

I can't confirm that it has all been republicans, but republicans have clearly dominated the proceedings.

Maybe warp is right - it is TOO partisan. The democrats haven't gotten a chance....

Everyone who testified on Monday was a Republican and someone Trump hired or invited.

Yep, that's hyperpartisan - when do Democrats get their say?

Right, one can't ignore the former members of the Trump administration, all Republicans, testifying about just how bat shirt crazy the White House and the Oval Office had become.

I think they are being honest. But I don't think they mind one bit paying back Le Gras Rouge for running a crazy shop.

And it doesn't hurt their careers to make the point that they were on "team normal".

Indeed. In the master-slave relationship, it doesn't matter which group are in the majority.

In the cotton fields of Virginia and Louisiana it was lopsided, hundreds of slaves to a few masters, but those few masters "outvoted" those hundreds of slaves, while in the Homestead, a family of a dozen (masters) might have two or three house servants (slaves). The masters still "outvoted" the slaves.

The master-slave analogy for political partisanship is clearly about the most stupid "argument" that Warp12 could possibly have come up with!

I see that Warp is dodging like hell the point that the GOP Had a chance for full participation and they rejected it.

It's really simple.

Donald Trump ignored his oath of office

He openly worked to subvert our democracy.

He is a traitor to his country.

Ah, but apparently you can only investigate that if you are a member of his party and have decided before the investigation that Trump was not only innocent but actually won the 2020 election.

Not only that but the fat bastard conned a bunch of his supporters into giving him $250 million for an election defense fund that didn't exist.

One should not expect any less from Trump.

After all, ...

Trump stole millions from his own father,
Trump stole millions using his 'Trump University',
Trump stole tens of millions from his creditors,
Trump stole tens of millions from the US tax payers,
Trump diverted tens of millions of US tax payer funds to his properties when he was the President,

And now, the stupid, disgusting, lying POS Trump has stole hundreds of millions from his own followers.

What's non-partisan about reaction to traitor Trump's turn coat tricks is that Americans of all parties and political affiliations are shocked, enraged and embarrassed!

To pointless try to make clear something that has been generally assumed in this discussion, "partisan" does not simply mean "more of one side". Warp12, this is how you claim to be treating it; you are saying that by asking "is it partisan?" you are just asking "are there more Democrats than Republicans on the committee". Which is obviously "yes", and also obviously a really dumb question to ask as the answer is quite simple and clear. However, where you are either being disingenuous or innocently ignorant is that this isn't what "partisan" means.

Partisan has strong negative connotations. A quick look at definitions gives "prejudiced in favor of a particular cause." Synonyms include "biased", "prejudiced", "discriminatory" That's not just "more Democrats than Republicans".

Is investigating the January 6th insurrection attempt a partisan action? Is it biased or prejudiced? Does it display a strong support of a particular party? Well, I think most people would agree that investigating violent attempts to overthrow the government are absolutely an area of interest to the government. This is what they SHOULD be doing. If the Democrats had tried to violently overthrow the Trump regime, I'm sure the Republicans would be "frothing" (as you put it) and howling for blood. So I don't see anything "partisan" about the investigation.

How about the Republicans refusing to support the investigation? People tried to violently overthrow the government that they are part of and they aren't willing to investigate it? Um, what the hell? As mentioned above, there's no way they'd tolerate that from their political opponents. So yes, their actions are highly "partisan".

Note that "lopsided" also has strong connotations of negativity or unfairness. If you say "The team for my surgery is really lopsided; all medical experts with no interns" people would think you are being sarcastic or nonsensical; why is having all experts BAD?

So Warp12, that's why people are disagreeing with you so strongly. By asking if its partisan, you are asking "is it bad"? And people are saying "no, its not". If that is your intent, you need to explain WHY forming the committee is prejudiced, discriminatory, or, ya know, BAD.

The panel is made up of 9 members:
- 7 Dems, with a duty to discredit Republicans and exploit the process for political gain
- 2 biased, outcast, anti-trump Republicans with an axe to grind

Therefore, the panel is clearly highly partisan and I'll judge them on the quality of their information and results, which so far has not reflected any wrongdoing.

Considering how I've described the panelists individually and as a whole, I shouldn't be too surprised that other posters might be skeptical about my pronouncement of impartially judging them solely on what they produce, ignoring any poisoning of the well that may or may not have happened.

There's a bit of leeway here though, in that I'm not sure i can confidently assume what the definition of 'wrongdoing' might be. Perhaps we can have a few pages of that to keep things going.

Are you channelling Cain again?

TWO chances at full participation and rejected both of them.

Republicans decline to participate. Warp declines to participate. Irony noted.

That is a fairly common reaction by Trump supporters to repeatedly getting a botty-smacking and having their arses handed to them on a plate!!
.
.

We'd all be better off if we left the "I'm-backing-my-man-to-the-end" party loyalty to the politicians, party aligned elected representatives and politically appointed officials who feel the need to keep their parties together by holding the party line.

The rest of us can call 'em as we see 'em.
