International Men's Day is apparently controversial

Nah, there's nothing controversial about IMD. It's just dismissed outright as irrelevant. Apparently it's okay that human beings suffer as long as one is the proper gender.

LOL
The Equality and Diversity Committee is clear that the main focus of gender equality work should continue to be on the inequalities faced by women, and in particular the under-representation of women in the professoriate and senior management.
Like they say in Yes Minister, with any discussion paper, "Always dispose of the difficult bit in the title; it does less harm there than in the text". In this case, the issue of inequalities faced by men has been disposed of by by labeling the subject, "Gender Equality".

Oh, ya. I remember reading that and thinking wow they were angry despite the message being "women are more important but we should at least acknowledge men sometimes"

All of the highlighted is irrelevant.

I agree that men are not oppressed. There are of course issues that men face more than women and it's worth talking about (and vise versa) which is why it's disappointing to see supposed champions of equality try to suppress such things.

So you agree that it's not oppression but merely suppression? One is the hand-maiden to the other.

I don't want them suppressed. I want them not to go out of their way to push it to inflammatory memes.

International Prostate Cancer Awareness Day? I'm with them.
International Suicide Prevention/Awareness Day? Go for it.
International Equal Treatments for Dads Under the Law Day? Sign me up.
International Men's Day? No. What does it even mean.

And again, look at the strange bedfellows and fellow-travelers. I think you may get some kneejerk reaction from radical feminists, to whom any issue that is not a WOMEN'S issue is bad. But the reaction from sane progressives is to the MRAs who latched onto these issues and play the oppression card in lieu of fighting feminist advances just because they are anti-feminist.

No. What's apparent is that you choose to twist the objections to suit an agenda.

Did you give to leprosy research on your way to work this morning? Why do you support human suffering?

There ya go! Now you have not one, but two "Days" you can start.

Someone is threatened by one day to be proud to be a non violent non sexist male and highlighting issues

Your going to say good for you, your not violent.

To which I would say 90% of us aren't

Male societal problems are inisignificsnt in comparison to female ones. Add to that the fact that female lack of rights is the result of a historic male hegemony.

In the minds of feminists

What is so threatening about a mens day?

I don't think men are oppressed. What I meant by suppression was the suppression of even bringing up men's issues, by what I can only imagine are radical feminists. (edit: stifling might be a better word)

What do you mean by inflammatory memes?

I imagine international men's day means the same thing as international women's day except the sex is swapped. I don't have an attachment to either but I also don't see how either is controversial unless both are controversial.

I'm sorry but I don't know what you mean by your last sentence.

That's an interesting (and probably unquantifiable) claim but ultimately it's irrelevant. How does one group suffering less make talking about their suffering controversial?
edit: or do you think males suffer so little that the tiny bit they do suffer is irrelevant?

Out of curiosity, I am wondering how you've come to the conclusion that TODAY men are in a better position than women overall.

Again, you're not calling it oppression? Are you sure?

Who, exactly, are the women's rights/awareness groups striving to make women's rights and access equal to? It shouldn't take long to work it out when you consider the sort of binary thinking in institutions. It's "equality with men". Identifying an area that is of greater concern to men does not equate that to "rights" and particularly not "rights never given"... because they were given centuries ago.

It makes absolute sense that the group's continued emphasis would be on furthering women's rights and equality. There are very few areas where "men's rights" are unequal to women's, although there are numerous areas of concern to men that do need addressing.... just not as a right's issue, as a concern issue or issue issue.

Name a few current female rights issues that need addressing

Never have beat her.

Why so threatened?

You keep repeating this. Were you roughed up as a kid? Did feminists take your lunch money.

You're reaching out into the ether again for straw men. You're projecting. Thinking something is silly or unnecessary is not the same as feeling threatened. I know that's how manly men relate to things. If you can't scratch, fart and belch and beat its ass, then it's got to be "threatening", right?

It's a farce. The fact that posters here who are at least in pretend I AM NOT MRA mode insist on equating it with rights is a surefire giveaway. It ain't about rights. It's about issues. And I will not be in the least surprised to find out (if) that like the Race for the Cure, it turns out to be a bunch of self-sustaining fund raisers playing on hot button issues.

You want an International Men's Day? Have one. Don't expect me to show any interest, though. It's a farce, playing to neurotics who think they have to stem the flow of feminist advancement because "Halp! We're being oppressed."

:D You do know where I live, right? The next bushy-eyebrowed feminist who spouts of on rape culture in your or my home countries because some guy gave up a seat on a bus, have them drop into Thailand and Southeast Asia. I'll show you a rape culture.

I don't give a rat's ass about who gets the better table in the college cafeteria. There are actual women's RIGHTS issues in the rest of the world.

You keep asking "The stupid" question

Im fine with feminists taking a stand when it is relevant and would stand beside them

Name some current rights women do not have

Apparently one of the "significant" female issues is that some people want to bring attention to male issues and have a men's day.

No. That's an issue among certain feminists. Just as keeping women down is an issue among certain men.

As long as you're willing to concede that they are "issues" or "concerns", have your Men's Day. Because I think it's a silly misnomer and the "day" should be dedicated to the actual issues/concerns, I'll ignore it and/or continue to make fun of it. When you find actual issues that indicate "male" as a discriminated against minority, I'm all ears. (Important: Discriminated Against Minority.... not group (with issues) that happens to be in a statistical minority. Health problems are a fact. They have nothing (except in the fervid MRA imagination) to do with discrimination.)
