ICE uses church hypothermia shelter as a suspect trap

What international border, the coastline?

Just guessing but it might be near enough to a "port of entry" for international travel, in the same way you'd have customs at an international airport, there might be harbors close enough. I'm not sure how that works. Does JFK airport count as a "border?" Maybe.

ETA: I should have checked the link provided.

Paulhutch's link cleared it up. It's absurd, sadly.

Would you be happy to present your ID at any time when instructed to do so by a LEO?
I might not be thrilled, but I wouldn't object. I carry documents all the time. Usually a driver's license but in other countries my passport as well. I work in a field that does background checks and requires me to carry a fingerprint clearance card if I go onto a primary or secondary campus. (This also means that even without ID my identity will be retrievable through fingerprint databases). If something happens to me in another country I want proof of U.S. citizenship at hand.

I knew a guy that seemed as out-of-it as anyone could be. He'd obviously lived on the streets. But he always wore the same bib overalls and had his Medicare card in the front (foolproof) pocket.

"Between Las Cruces and Albuquerque" is pretty vague. Cruces and ABQ are at opposite ends of the state, the same distance away from each other as New York City and Washington DC.
What the hells does that have to do with it? And id advise you to look at the map
Only 1 way to get there effectively. I 25. That's it.
And Albuquerque Is in the MIDDLE of the State, with Las Cruces at the South Center.

If you saw them using EBT cards, then they're here legally. It's virtually impossible to get on a welfare program as a non US citizen (and I'm including identify theft and fraud).*

Food assistance is less than 1% of all government spending.

Two salient points that seem to have gone largely unnoticed.

Nothing. I grew up in Las Cruces, and had (and still have) relatives in Albuquerque, so I've been back and forth many times in my life. I was amused at the description, because I remember that being quite the long boring drive. I recommend stopping at the Owl Bar and Cafe on the way, if you're ever going that way yourself. Or a Blake's, but I always liked the Owl better.

I presume Newtons Bit means the northbound I-25 checkpoint up by Hatch.

No, there are other ways. They just take longer.

So because they were brown and on food stamps and weren't speaking English, you assume they didn't know English and were illegal immigrants?

You realize that speaking English is not a requirement for being an American citizen, right?

Granted I am posting as I am reading so that I have not read the entire thread, but I find this infuriating, too. My grandparents were naturalized citizens from countries with vastly different languages. By the time I was born they both spoke passable English, but because their original common language was French, that was what they spoke to one another (in public even!!!). My father, though born in the US, was raised with French as his first language so he could, you know, communicate with his family. Now, if one sees a family speaking another language in line at a grocery store, why again are they suspected of being illegal? FYI random fact- I speak English and Spanish, but zero French!

Being able to speak English is not a requirement for legal status. There is no English test to become a green card holder, and the English test for citizenship can be waived if the applicant has a medical condition that makes it impossible for them to learn English.

Someone in the US without papers is not eligible for public assistance, meaning no taxpayer dollars are going to support them. However, undocumented workers do pay taxes.

They had an EBT card, which would show they are documented.

Where is the evidence that "trying to avoid freezing to death" = "undocumented?"

English is one of the hardest languages to learn. It takes more than "a few months" to become proficient enough to function. Also, as I said above, being able to speak English is not a requirement for a green card or citizenship. Heck, there are parts of Pennsylvania where German ("Pennsylvania Dutch") is the local language - and they are citizens by birth!

And why shouldn't someone patronize ethnic businesses? Immigrants have been doing just that since before the U.S. existed. For someone who has only recently arrived, being surrounded by familiar sights and smells can make the transition easier.

Eh... No. The Constitution applies to everyone in the US.

Quite a few of my students have told me they're here illegally. Public education in this country isn't cheap.

One of my great-grandfathers spoke only Italian. His children handled translations when he needed them.

I want evidence that they did not have specific individuals as targets. The other raids that I've read about did, although others were taken in as well - mostly criminals.

ETA:
By "suspects" do you mean known individuals? If that is the case then I have no issue with this incident.

When LEO target specific individuals, they know who they are and where they are. This was a general sweep of "suspects" (meaning everyone who looked Latino). The article makes that clear. They weren't asking for "Pedro Sanchez", they were papering brown-skinned people in general.

SEND HIM HOME!!! :D The US doesn't have an official language, yet people still trot out BS like the crap we are responding to. I have so many friends who are citizens but speak varying levels of English and have varying levels of English language skills. I just don't understand how someone can think that it in any way plays into determining someone's citizenship, 'American-ness' or whatever. To paraphrase the great American thinker, Kelly Bundy - "It wobbles the mind"...

I disagree. One reverend's statement (including the hyperbole "Jumped on them") does not constitute evidence, neither does the newscaster's proclamations.

A witness (again, not proof) in the video said that one of the men was a robbery suspect. ICE says only two people were arrested.

If ICE is waiting outside of places like this in an attempt to check out anyone who leaves then there would be corresponding policy, or an order given by someone to do so.

I would be against such a practice, but so far all claims that this is happening have been bogus. Evidence should not be hard to obtain. I would think this would be happening elsewhere as well.

I am prepared to be outraged, so show me the evidence.

Just to complicate matters, I live in an area where tens of thousands of people speak no English whatsoever, and they are 4th, 5th or more generation Americans. Many of the women have no drivers licenses or any form of identification at all. They use whatever government benefits are available including WIC coupons, SSDI, etc.

And yet ICE isn't questioning or attempting to deport anybody. Maybe it's because they're white and the language they're speaking is Hebrew and not Spanish.

http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-...gration-raids-are-reported-around-the-country

"We made 161 arrests, and of those 161, 151 of those had prior criminal convictions. ... The majority of them were felons and those felons which had prior convictions included sex offenses, domestic violence, assault, robbery and weapons violations, just to name a few," said Marin in a press teleconference held late Friday.
Breaking up families, right?

There were anecdotal reports of ICE staging traffic checkpoints and random sweeps of people suspected of being here illegally. ICE's Marin called those reports "dangerous and irresponsible."
This is evidence that my claim is correct. I could be wrong. I need to be convinced.

Makes sense.

Are there gangs of Jews running around killing people and smuggling 90% of heroin in the US across the Mexican border?

Check LA, there are tens (probably hundreds) of thousands of Mexican gang members in hundreds of gangs. One city/county. The percentage that are here illegally is very high, half or more in some of the largest gangs. The percentage claims are arguable, I have been trying to get more reliable numbers

Final note until evidence is shown that ICE is conducting raids as claimed in this thread...

I am not for rounding up all illegals. The most violent, sure. I am more concerned about keeping people out from now on, for economic and national security reasons. In that order.
