horrifying attack on Jussie Smollett

Why are people so unsure about the odor of bleach?

It's a pretty strong and distinctive odor.
If it was bleach and it was poured over him you would see the bleaching of his clothes and hair and probably some damage to the skin on the scalp and other exposed skin.

Re:OP: the 'horrifying' attack on Smollette, or at least his reputation and career, may just be beginning....

Not only that, when I think of what my own reaction would be to someone pouring bleach on me, I have to shake my head at Smollett's story.

I would freak the freak out if I believed someone just poured bleach on me.

I'd be calling 911 immediately.

His clothes were noted as "stained" I believe in the police report. Effects on his body might depend on where and how and how much of the liquid was poured and exactly what bleach smelling liquid. There are whole sections of cleaning products that contain bleach but probably wouldn't burn your skin if you got a little on you.

I think a report said that his clothes had street salt residue. Something about seeing him on video without salt residue and then seeing that he has the salt on him.

But I don't recall anything reported about the "liquid" causing visible damage to his clothing. Pure bleach would do that quickly and the investigating officers might have been able to see the whitening getting worse in front of their eyes.

Here is a Smollett selfie taken on the plane in NYC before he arrives in Chicago. You can compare it to the hospital photo to see if his face swelled up from the beating.

If you smell bleach, you think bleach...I think.

You don't think, "Cleaning product containing a little bleach, don't worry".

You think BLEACH!

How long would it take you to call 911 if someone poured bleach on you on a Chicago street in the dead of night?

Wouldn't you tell the person you were talking to on the phone that bleach was just poured on you and you need to get to the hospital?

Suppose it got in your eyes?

(Why didn't it?)

I think we have to leave my earlier hypothesis on the table.

Smollett didn't want the fake assault story to go public or to go to the police. It was never meant to be a publicity stunt. It was a lie told to Condo Guy and nobody else was supposed to know about it.

Or something like that. Basically a theory that he didn't really want the story to be told in public and he didn't want any official investigation.

Also his manager. Remember that his manager was on the phone. It may have been just intended for his circle of friends and acquaintances, but they insisted on calling the police.

I don't think his manager was on the phone.

I think that was an attempt at post hoc damage control. Smollett tells Condo Guy, who tells the cops.

The cops start their whole 'trust but verify' process, and Smollett reaches out to his manager to help with verification. They come up with the phone call claim, which was supposed to be supporting evidence, but also required more evidence to be produced. So it ends up being one more thing we're asked to trust but aren't supposed to verify.

On the other hand, he could have placed the phone call to his manager and acted out a scenario over the phone, doing all the voices and sound effects himself, fooling the manager and adding an "ear-witness" for extra plausibility.

He could have, but that is very unlikely, don't you think?

This whole thing is unlikely, but the alternatives would seem to be either the attack was real or the manager was in on it or an accessory after the fact. On that last hypothetical, maybe that seems plausible too.
