First off, I have got to properly introduce myself as I have been a lurker here for a very long time and I have learned much from a lot of the posters on here, but yes I have finally gotten around to actually registering lol.

My favorite threads to read on this forum have definitely been about the consciousness because that one particular topic sparks a great interest for me, now on to my question, has consciousness been fully explained? Why is there so much discussion about consciousness?

It might sound like such a newbie and vague question but that is because I am pretty much a newbie when it comes to these types of discussion.

One of the problems with defining consciousness is...we're not even sure what it is. We know we are conscious because we experience it firsthand, but how do we know other entities we interact with are conscious? Is it conscious if it passes a Turing test? We don't know.

Sometimes what's really interesting about this conundrum are the questions that it raises, since there are few answers.

What we know about consciousness consists mainly of knowing what we don't know.

Welcome.

I, too, get a kick out of the consciousness threads, and have followed them for a while. Here's my attempt at a summation: The aspects of consciousness that have been defined have been explained. Undefined aspects remain (funnily enough) unexplained.

One of the wonders of the brain. Another question is, will computers ever become conscious?

Welcome to the jungle. i be one of the few that will share items many may not agree with but i rather enjoy pointing out items many may wish to observe and see for themselves.

either way, welcome and hope you find yourself evolving with new information.

Depends on how you address your inquiry. If you are seeking the psychological description then there are many methods of identifying consciousness. If you are seeking the short answer, i believe it is a life that is aware of itself and capable of conveying that; an identity of an 'i' and know it is doing it.

In the physiological or purely the living form, then the methodology of how life exists is the obstacle within the current paradigm of understanding.

Why is there so much discussion about consciousness?
I believe there has always been the inquiry within and from most every human being ever born at some point in their life. Within today's world far more communication can be articulated via the internet so it may appear that is it unique or special.
It might sound like such a newbie and vague question but that is because I am pretty much a newbie when it comes to these types of discussion.

You are just like us just trust yourself you ask quality questions (be fair) and do the extra homework when you find items and ideas that tickle your mind.

i find asking myself questions assist me in digging a little deeper and i have little value to opinions that have zero application to reality.

I see a human being as using the coherance of memories combined with the ability to learn abstract terms to describe or understand with words. I can say 'tree' and you may have 50 different variations to that tree within your memory and then ask, 'a juniper?' In which you comprehended the sounds or letters to recognize term tree but then with that identity a whole flash of memories are linked to that term.

Physiologically that coherance of memories is based on how a life stores information. Some consider the brain and nervous system as based on a sort of electrical device but i am not one of them. I see memories as similar to polaritonics in which a wavelength (phonon) can impose to a stucture (glial) and be recalled. That assembly of memories can be reviewed much faster than anything electrical.

kind of esoteric but i am a little whacked on causality while some others prefer believing what they are told.

Anyway, enjoy the idea and if there are any questions be fair and do a little homework on the items yourself (as i can assure you many will not believe what i just wrote; my disclosure)

I guess a follow up question would be, how much of it has been explained? or should I even attempt to ask that question?

Nope. It can't even be defined consistantly.

This ^^

I have no idea if my conscious experience is even remotely similar to yours. How two people experience "green", for example, might be vastly different.

Yes. The details of how the brain works are something we're still piecing together, though we know a great deal.

Consciousness is the easy bit.
