Greta Thunberg - brave campaigner or deeply disturbed? Part II.

I'm not seeing much in the way of blocking proposals outside of these whale people demanding a halt to seismic surveying of the sea floor in preparation of building a wind farm.

Oops, it looks like I'm going to have to eat that statement, pass the ketchup. Here's a headline I never thought I'd be writing.

They eat the reindeer, I guess they are killed with kindness.
Apart from that her cause looks noble except the windmills power around 8% of Norway houses.

Most of us saw this coming the moment she first showed up on the scene

...and if you read the article it's clear why she was there.

At least it puts to bed the suggestion that she's some kind of "renewables at any cost" absolutist but then again that's hardly surprising given that's a straw man portrayal.

Yep, from the instant she showed up at Standing Rock most people figured out she'd end up being nothing more than a symbol making outrageous demands that her followers would be forced to agree with in fear of being labeled "the enemy"

On the upside, global CO2 emissions only increased 1% in 2022. On the downside we need a 7% decrease every year for the next decade to avert 1.5C.

The fact that's she's protesting for the removal of 2 wind farms was to hilarious not to post.

Not really NIMBY. The windmills were built on land where the indigenous Sami people herd reindeer. The Norwegian supreme court has deemed the building of the windmills on their land as illegal.

It would be like the US government building a windmill park in a Native American reservation.

I'm very pro-wind power. I have a wind mill park in my backyard. But taking the land of a people who has been oppressed in Norway for centuries and putting up one, that's not good.

I'm actually on Greta's side on this one. To an extent. Sami people practicing traditional land use aren't the emissions problem. Why should their land, of all land, be sacrificed ahead of other land claimed by high-emissions people groups?

That said, the wind farm has already been installed, and the need for more renewables is dire. Removing the farm is therefore not as simple a question as not installing it in the first place.

So the Sami people are interested in complaining about the problem (see Thunberg's writings on this) but not interested in being part of the solution despite living in a country that's considered one to the problem countries?

Identity politics +1, fight against climate change 0

Wikipedia says...

The reindeer graze on pastures with an area of approximately 146 thousand km2 in the provinces of Finnmark, Troms, Nordland and Trøndelag, which is 40% of the mainland part of Norway.

Just how big are these wind farms?

Nope. I reject your formulation.

The issue is that everybody from Greta's ardent fans to national governments love to pay lip service to Greta's calls for immediate and drastic change. But they only actually support minor, gradual change, especially at someone else's expense. Why should these Sami be on the **** end of that stick?

This is a classic case of the wants of a few out weighing the needs of the many. Given how all hell is supposed to break loose once we hit 1.5C with many parts of the planet becoming unlivable, I figure these guys could give up a bit of land for the greater good.

That was my first thought. But my second thought was, why should these guys be the first and only few to make the sacrifice?

It's not looking like too severe a sacrifice given the massive amount of land the Sami have available for grazing but, point taken. I people only too seriously the sacrifices that Thunberg and her followers are asking us to make if they actually thought what escalating CO2 reductions on the scale of 2020 would actually mean then they might rethink the whole thing.

Maybe they have privately but still won't admit it publicly and given how Thunberg is big on rhetoric and shy on solutions maybe that rhetoric is the sole source of her appeal.

The natives aren't using their land for anything of importance, so why not just take their land?

This "Sami people control 40% of Norwegian territory!" has been used by anti-Sami Norwegians too, and it's simply false. There are 12 other massive wind farms in Northern Norway, and none of these have been deemed illegally put up by the Norwegian supreme court.

Yes, we need more green energy. But let's put it up legally, yeah?

Easy for you to tell them to give up their land, when you're not Sami and it's not your land.

If she had come out in favor of this wind farm you can bet that the same people critical of her for opposing it would instead be talking about how harmful her polices are to indigenous people.

Sure boss, whatever you say. Anything to keep the fantasy alive. Just rip down those wind farms while begging for more wind (and solar). It's screwy logic but I suppose it could be made to work.

Anyways

now that March 3 has passed and everybody is wondering what to do while their voices loose their hoarseness form all the screaming, yelling and singing maybe a few brave sould would like to try their hands at the latest environmental craze...Being an anti-influncer on the Chinese spyware app, TikTok

Fair warning though, these people are somewhat amateurish, you need to up the game. Not only do you not need an avocado holder, you need to not buy avocados because they cause deforestation, water loss pesticide and fertilizer use as well as screwing up the soil.

Before jumping on the coconut oil bandwagon, be sure to encourage your viewers to ascertain whether the coconuts used to make that oil haven't been harvested by enslaved monkeys.

Side note: From the comments section, I've never heard this one before.

I'm all for the 4-R's. Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle should be the very last.

I wouldn't take that bet..

Typically 'those same people' i.e. the right/climate change deniers ( according to you ), are not often concerned about the rights of indigenous peoples, so why would you make such a bet?
