Gov. Jindal's response to Obama - FAIL

You have a point, but this was billed by the GOP as being the coming out of it's Next Big Thing, and it was a disaster. Jindal is not out of it, but he is longer the Great Hope of the GOP for 2012.

On the basis of shortage of alturnatives he likely still isn't for now. What he isn't is the great hope for 2009 which makes a mess the republican's recovery stratergy.

It was hardly up to 'There is no liberal America or Conservative Amercica, there is only the...etc' standards, but they could have done worse. Tom Tancredo, for example.

I can see his point, volcano monitering isn't something that is gonna add a whole hell of a lot of stimulus to the economy. Still I'd consider criticizing something that maybe doesn't have the potential to save many lives? Then again, does anyone know if these extra funds are even necessary for current volcano monitering?

Well, Gov. Jindal is a Young-Earth Creationist, so I guess that it only makes sense that he completely ignore anything having to do with geology

Is he really?

He signed the latest version of creationist anti-science obstructionism, a so-called "academic freedom" bill, into law. And it's the only law like it in the entire United States - making Louisiana unique in its desire to propagate stupidity & ignorance as the rest of the country marches into the 21st century. That's close enough for me.

Does it outlaw teaching evolution?

Does it outlaw teaching evolution?

Nope, it just promotes the teaching of misconceptions, lies, and half-truths about evolution - also called the "weaknesses of evolution" (which is creationist-speak for "crap we make up") - as part of a creationist campaign to essentially weaken science education. And evolution isn't the only area - it applies this scorched-earth mentality to other areas of science considered "controversial" by hardcore Christian conservatives, like climate change and stem cell research.

It would be as if nutjobs on this Forum got a law passed which would allow history teachers to "teach the criticisms of the official 9/11 report" or teach Holocaust denialism as true without any regard for facts or intellectual honesty - oh yeah, and the teachers who did so would be protected, by law, from being disciplined for contributing to the stupidity of their students.

So, you know, no big deal

I wish someone would ask Jindal the following question:

Which word don't you understand, "volcano" or "monitoring"?

Or just "Do you know what a volcano is?"

:D

I see. So evolution is still taught you had me worried. Is there a creationist textbook that will also be taught in biology classes? BTW there are many examples of University Profs questioning the "official 911 report". There are also several "Holocaust questioners" if not full blown denialists on University faculties so I don't see how that relates to this issue.

Yes, just really, really badly - in such a manner as to convince students that it is wrong. So for all practical purposes it is as if they aren't really teaching it.

Is there a creationist textbook that will also be taught in biology classes?

Yes, the law allows for the use of "supplemental materials", and one of the primary supplements is a book called Explore Evolution by, drum roll please, the creationists at the Discovery Institute!

Explore Evolution is essentially a creationist text full of all the old, worn-out creationist arguments against evolution, just written up in a slick, glossy looking book. The one thing it doesn't do, which is different, is that it doesn't explicitly mention ID-creationism - but the implication is there.

That's it... I'm outta here...

I'm not sure what you mean by teaching evolution badly. I thought evolution was self-evident. Is there something in the creationist book that would tend to put evolution into doubt? I would think given the strength of Evolution science that no alternative view would even be considered when presented. BTW I read the text of the act as signed and you will be relieved to know that "climate change" is not mentioned. It only mentions the, no loner operative, term of "Global warming" and Stem Cell research was completely missing.

[...] If that's the best the GOP has to offer, they're screwed [...]

They are screwed, but the best GOP had to offer was Ron Paul.

Still not good enough for me though. Politics are a mental illness.

I love how he screwed the pooch with that volcano monitoring bit...

Interesting coincidence, because when I look at the socialists (both R's and D's) I tend to draw parallels with a cult of savages living on an island intent on throwing a virgin down their volcano to appease the gods they imagine dwell therein. Their priests have brainwashed them that they need their mysticism to survive - no different than the Stockholm Syndrome most people feel toward the government.

In my analogy, the sacrificial virgin are the tens of thousands of dollars the Federal government steals from each of us every year. The savages are those who fail to realize that there is a more rational way to assess the risk of natural disaster, as an insurance company would, and raise the funds for reasonable, cost-effective safety measures from the property owners who would be affected.

Well, Gov. Jindal is a Young-Earth Creationist, [...]

It's sad that some "false atheists" (people who worship government as their god) fail to understand religion and its role in right-wing politics. It's not much different than the left-wing dogma, only targeted at a different audience. The advertisers don't care if their ad makes sense, they care if it gets you to do what they want - accept the state as your master.

All politicians lie to get elected. I don't see how Obama's economic policies are any better than Young-Earth Creationism, and unlike religion they are imposed on everyone by force.

Of course you see that, because you are completely, totally, and utterly wrong. About pretty much everything.

Kinda like the way you phrased the response I lifted that quote from.
Forgive this poor old redneck. I am just puzzled about the concern that evolution, which has been so completely validated, could be threatened by an obviously ridiculous notion that, almost 100% of religions espouse in one form or another could not be overcome with a convincing rebuttal or just simple ridicule of the ignorant kid that asks the question.

I take it you're not familiar with creationist nonsense.

The only thing that validates evolution is the facts.

Suppose instead that children are taught stuff that creationists have made up.

It's not about two points of view, one of which is wrong. It's about two sets of facts, one of which is fiction.

Hey, Tex. Perhaps my sarcasmometer is broken today, but I can't really tell if you are being intentionally obtuse or actually agree that evolution is so obvious (as in "backed by evidence") that you don't know why it's questioned. It does seem strange that you wouldn't be aware of all the hubbub in Texas though.

I'll give the benefit of the doubt here. Creationsists usually misrepresent, obfuscate, or just plain lie about evolution. Instead of enumerating, I'll pass you to Steven Novella who highlights these strategies here.

We are aware of your opinions.

They are wrong.
