Good 'ol Danes.......

That wasn't what I meant, and you know it. :p

If there were never any self-consciously willfull misunderstandings there would be no humor. We would all be melancholy we would .... never mind

:)

(c'mon Kerberos, you get that allusion, don't you?:))

Ahh. this wouldn't have anything to do with any double entendres in relation to coalition of the "willing" would it?

Yuppsie. That and Hamlet.

Sometimes, when you have been posting with someone for ages the humor is a bit "in".

I bet you can even say naughty words and show a bit of skin on tv without people calling their lawyers in Denmark ;)

Lawyers in Denmark are obligated to provide sexual favors to their clients so, yes, such a call would be expected.

Indeed.

I note how I have not come across even a mention of this in the US press. I suspect that it upsets their delicate sensibilities to even draw attention to such an un-PCish thing. They will protect us.

Haven't you heard? Christianity is under attack here too and the religious must stick together and not give ammo to the nasty secularists. No belief is too whacky to protect. If it's tax exempt it's immune.

... and two of its cartoonists have been forced into hiding.
What's special about those two? I've only looked at the Torygraph link (and nobody takes anything from there for granted), but why have the other 10 not felt "forced" into hiding? Is there perhaps an attempt by the sadder element to identify themselves with Theo Van Gogh?

The ambassadors of 11 Muslim countries called on Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the prime minister, to take "necessary steps" against the "defamation of Islam".

They all used the term "necessary steps"? Was there some sort of co-ordination? The responses are not those of natural Dutch-speakers, apart perhaps from Indonesia, so it would be remarkable if all their translators arrived at the same formulation.

But Mr Rasmussen, the head of a centre-Right minority coalition dependent for its survival on support from an anti-foreigner party, called the cartoons a "necessary provocation" and refused to act.

The Torygraph is an anti-foreigner party in itself. I think I see where it's coming from here, and why it's the first link provided. I will delve further tomorrow.

Some stripper and some politician in the [building where all the politicians are] a few years ago. Was aired around 1500 or something.
You remember that?
Because i'm sure someone would be interested in a linky to that. And i don't know how to find it.

Sincerely
Tobias

Or it could be that there are more important things to report than news about a cartoon in Denmark.

Like whether or not Tyra Banks' breasts are real.

It is important because if the Moslem lads get really pissed off and nuke Copenhagen, we can write a note to self: "do not case Yacob Schmirnoff as Mohammad in new yuk-fest flik: Night of the Zombie Turbins".

I look at it as a good experimental venue, safe, far away and not noticeable if removed.

Now our brave and ground breaking satirists know it is safe.

at least they evince some balls.....

I wonder if they'll have the balls to do caricatures of Jesus? A cross with "NRA" instead of "INRI" perhaps. Jesus herding Jews into the killing-fields of Armageddon. Jesus bombing an abortion clinic.

Joshua riding a tank across the Jordan with gunships hovering overhead. Moses in a pointy wizard's hat, conjuring up frogs. David as a gangster. Solomon as a Hugh Hefner figure.

I'm all for ridiculing religion.

The Crusades

This is a slight digression, but it makes me wonder if there will be protests that the History Channel is doing a series on The Crusades? On the other hand the part of the begining that I saw might make the whole thing a prpaganda too for Islamists.

To explain, briefly, there was a portrayal of Pope Urban, as a slightly mad and highly devious fanatic starting the Crusades to liberate the Holy Land from the infidels and those who signed up would be guaranteed either whatever riches they could plunder or a full pass to heaven if they died, with all sins forgiven.

Change a few names and the whole sorry story could have been OBL and his minions today.

Has the church apologized for this one, yet?

I think that they did, for all the good post hoc apologies 900 years on do.

I caught a bit over an hour of it last night. They are telling it pretty much the Runciman does, in fact most authors that I have read.

Cicciolina? She did her trick in Norway, partly undressing in the Senate.

Cicciolina wasn't the first female member of the Italian Parliament, but she was doubtless the most famous internationally.

Her public notoriety as a porn star is what drew people to her campaign rallies. That, plus the fact that her political speeches always included a glimpse of her left breast and sometimes even a complete striptease. After winning a seat in Parliament, Cicciolina continued acting in adult videos for another two years.
