Gallup: NRA more Popular than Obama

The reason, the important reason, for having a gun at home is "self-defense." That means a gun at the ready so as to be employed without hesitation. The problem is that leaving a gun like that is irresponsible. The contradiction is a problem for "ardent" gunners.

That isn't the only important reason to have a gun.

Some guns are locked away, one isn't. Kids don't have to know where it is, unless your ten year old is responsible enough to know. If you had children, this would be easier for you to understand.

Adequate home defense is only possible with multiple firearms now?

No, I'm a farmer who has to shoot multiple critters, plus I like to hunt in the Rockies and shoot larger critters.

And what of those who aren't you? Isn't the requirement that a gun be properly secured a real contradiction towards also being available?

That's the reason that leads the pack in NRA propaganda. I've stated that long guns have their uses, for example I mentioned that I've helped thin the coyote population around here.

But tell me, what are the "important" reasons for having a gun?

Ammon Bundy knows.

Not to the same scale as we do in the USA. Our culture indoctrinates people into thinking that the gun violence is the ultimate equalizer and tool of justice, and the media is part of that indoctrination.
Modified slightly and it is my opinion exactly. And guns are among the worst tools available to inflict violence.

If we can, to some extent, use technology to keep a gun from being fired by anyone other than its lawful owner, that sounds like something smart to consider.

A commentor over on Slashdot had this to say in response to criticisms of "smart gun" technology:

I dunno about you but I'd gladly take the tradeoff of a gun that fires 99.999% of the time when I want it to if it also fires 0% of the time if someone wrestles it out of my grasp or some less responsible member of the household somehow manages to get a hold of it and starts messing around with it.

The "99.999%" may be somewhat exaggerated, but I have to agree.

And what of those who aren't you?
Have no idea what you're asking.
Isn't the requirement that a gun be properly secured a real contradiction towards also being available?
No, a gun is nothing without ammo, that's why ammo is put in another place. When the two get together, one has to have the bullets actually loaded into to the firearm.
Even then you still have to kick run into the chamber. Its not hard at all to have kids around guns and be safe, especially if they're taught.

Amazing you don't know these things.

And everyone always does what they're supposed to do. Do you never have visitors?

I know, as a liberal you want to protect people so much. We should all just bow down to government so that no one will ever have another problem again.

I have a better idea, let me do what the hell I like. ;)

Strawman argument already? If you can't try harder than that...
I have a better idea, let me do what the hell I like. ;)
And if people die because you do just that what then?
