It's always been surface level weird to me that Liberal/Democratic/Left is the side we associate as pro-Union as a political voting demographic.
When I think unions I think things like cops and truck drivers and blue collar factory workers, jobs that don't scream "Liberal" to me.
I mean "Women, minorities, gays, and the Teamsters" doesn't exactly roll of the tongue.

The AFL-CIO, a massive collection of different trade unions that represents over 12 million workers, has backed Harris.
The National Education Association (the union that represents roughly 3 million teachers and education workers) has endorsed Harris.
The Service Employees International Union (represents over 1.9 million service workers) has endorsed Harris.
The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (1.4 million non-Federal government employees) has endorsed Harris.
The Teamsters (1.4 million truckers and warehouse workers) has not yet endorsed a candidate. The head of the Teamsters did appear and speak at the GOP convention.
United Food and Commercial Workers (1.3 million) has endorsed Harris.
United Auto Workers (990,000) has endorsed Harris.
And so forth. So yeah I read the landscape wrong on that one.

You're forgetting the underlying philosophy behind much of conservatism: "I got mine, so **** everybody else". Once someone's in a union they're set and don't need all that working together for the common good and other leftist crap.

The Democrats have traditionally been the party of the working class, although that has changed dramatically over the last decade or so, particularly when it comes to the White working class. In general, union leadership tends to be more liberal than the rank and file workers they represent.
BTW, nobody seriously thought the FOP was going to endorse Kamala, right? Right?

It's because in most countries the parties of the left are the parties of labour. America's a bit different because it never really had a left, so labour groups never properly gained political representation.
I first came across the USA's strange attitude and definitions in regard to "labor" and "capital" in of all things EE "Doc" Smith's science fiction. It was cartoonist when he was writing about it almost a hundred years ago, it made his science seem reasonable in comparison, the USA doesn't seem to have moved on much since then. (For those that are interested his heroes are always on the side of "capital".)

In presidential elections the Republican candidates have won a majority of the white vote since Nixon in 1968. Even Obama couldn't win a majority of white voters. Polling indicates he got 43% in 2008 and 39% in 2012. Bill Clinton did about the same. Hillary Clinton got about 37% of the white vote in 2016.

Take a look at who fills out the rank and file of law enforcement. There's no shortage of people guilty of the same or worse. Plus, they were a bunch of anti-vaxxer ematheads.
Much like the Orange Weakling, most of them are more about the enforcement than the law.
More than a few of the rioters were cops as well.

That's just marketing. The GQP has still made dissolving unions one of their core missions. They also oppose raising wages, protecting workers, providing healthcare, sick time and vacations...basially everything usions are supposed to fight for.
True, racism and classism have always palgued unions. Its sad how many white middle class voters would rather see their children suffer than see a black guy move next door. Plus, neoliberals like Bill Clinton taking over and basically adopting the GQP economic policies screwed over a lot of those workers.
Not really. Union leadership has just sucked for the last 40 years. Whether they are over all feckless or in bed with the investor class and politicians, they haven't really served the best interest in members. When union leaders show some goddamned backbone, their members tend to follow suit.
Of course not. After all, police have never been "alw enforcement" but rather "feelings enforcement". And nobody needs their feelings protected by force of arms quite like conservatives.

I recall reading a local news interview with a union official -- in the construction trades alliance -- who was visiting job sites in 2016, trying to get support for Hillary Clinton. He said he was telling the workers that trump "is going to kill us," but they didn't care. He said they all emphasized one issue: taxes. They believed they'd go up under Hillary and down under trump and that was all they really cared about.
It's a h-u-g-e, h-u-g-e issue.
Two guys who are unionized construction workers that I know fairly well -- one is a welder, the other a carpenter -- support trump. They both say the same thing:
All they care about is taxes, that they feel they pay way too much. Not just income tax, but property tax on their homes, sales tax on almost everything they buy. My buddy Larry says, "I don't care about all that political crap. trump will cut taxes -- or at least says he will -- the Democrats always raise them. I'm voting for trump."
I am pretty good buddies with Larry but if I start talking about threats to democracy or encroaching authoritarianism his eyes glaze over. He doesn't want to hear it. He says it's above his pay grade.

Most of the union guys I know live in the suburbs around NYC, so their taxes actually have gone up because of Trump. But, a lot of them still love him, even though 10 years ago they were calling him a clown and swindler. I really don't know white that is.

I think your buddies are pretty typical of a lot of people. I wonder what amount of taxes they think would not be "too high"? I bet they also complain about the state of the roads, schools, etc. that those taxes pay for.
