Fraternal Order of Police Endorses Trump

My taxes noticably went up after Trump introduced his stripped down one page return. This wasn't true for pretty much everybody?

Ours went up slightly. I remember my husband saying "So much for Trump's tax cut."

That's what I mean. I haven't talked to a single person that payed less. If these guys are really concerned about taxes, they didn't notice that he lied about their one single issue too?

I'm an hourly worker so my income varies a lot from year to year. I couldn't tell you if my income tax went up during the trump years. I always get a refund anyway. Local property tax is a much bigger deal.

"Lower taxes" is just like "secure the border" in it's something lying liars who lie SAY they are voting for Republicans for even though they provably don't actually do it.

So LEOs are now Laws We Care About Enforcing Officers.

Check.

To quote George Carlin: "They want to put street criminals in jail to make life safer for the business criminals. They're against street crime, providing that street isn't Wall Street."

I'm almost at the point of throwing out the idea that using the same term for "A small number of elite people are stealing my livelihood by rigging the system" and "A punk with a gun stopped me leaving a movie theater and demanded my wallet" is dishonest.

And there's layers to this. Yes I'm aware that if you added it up on some objective level I've almost certainly had more, far more probably, money stolen from my by Wall Street's wizard dueling shadow theater of the economic system then by the guy who broke into my car two years ago and stole the airbag but I don't think it's insane or unreasonable to say that there is SOMETHING about personal, direct crime that hits differently.

I don't lock my doors at night because of Bernie Madoff. And that's not to rank the kinds of crime or something but having your paycheck shorted by 1.28 over a course of 10 years so you lose 24,999 potential dollars from your 401k and having someone target you directly are different things.

Seriously? How often to cops investigate financial crimes and federal mishandling confidential documents? Basically never, except very specialized "cops" that are cops in the same way Harris was a cop.

And cops don't care about rape either.

The Teamsters Union is the only major union not to have endorsed Kamala Harris for President but they may yet do so.
Vice President Kamala Harris will meet with Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien and the union’s membership as it ponders an endorsement in the presidential race, the union said last Thursday....O’Brien angered Teamsters members by speaking at the RNC that month, where he complimented Trump following the attempt to assassinate him. He also scorched corporations for their hostility toward unions, though he refrained from criticizing the Trump administration’s record, which many union leaders say was an assault on organized labor. Politico news link

The Teamsters-Kamala Harris meeting is apparently scheduled for next Monday. But the irony is, whether the union endorses Harris or not, many of the rank-and-file Teamster members are likely to vote for Trump, as they did in 2016 and 2020. The Teamster Union endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020.

I recall reading a local news interview with a union official -- in the construction trades alliance -- who was visiting job sites in 2016, trying to get support for Hillary Clinton. He said he was telling the workers that trump "is going to kill us," but they didn't care. He said they all emphasized one issue: taxes. They believed they'd go up under Hillary and down under trump and that was all they really cared about.

It's a h-u-g-e, h-u-g-e issue.

Two guys who are unionized construction workers that I know fairly well -- one is a welder, the other a carpenter -- support trump. They both say the same thing:

All they care about is taxes, that they feel they pay way too much. Not just income tax, but property tax on their homes, sales tax on almost everything they buy. My buddy Larry says, "I don't care about all that political crap. trump will cut taxes -- or at least says he will -- the Democrats always raise them. I'm voting for trump."

I am pretty good buddies with Larry but if I start talking about threats to democracy or encroaching authoritarianism his eyes glaze over. He doesn't want to hear it. He says it's above his pay grade. :(

He'll sell his children into slavery for promises to cut taxes two seconds thought will tell him will never happen. Tell him this next time he starts kvetching.

It's not, trust me.

It is though. When those union guys start bitching about Democrats raising taxes, do things like point out how Trump's tax policy actually raised it for middle working class in New York, how the Democrtats' tax policies actually focus on raising taxes on the rich, or how tax revenues are used to provide services that actually lower their cost of living by greater amounts than they pay in taxes.

Tell us how they react. I bet you've already tried this and know exactly what I'm talking about.

"Taxes" is not the reason, it's jsut their excuse.

The problem is, and this has been pointed out, is that so many working class people seem themselves as rich people in waiting.

They legit read a headline like "Mr. Dem O'Crat is going to raise taxes on third yacht purchases by .01%" and freak out even their red Maga hat is the most expensive thing they own.

If you have a favorite Raman flavor (Roasted Chicken for the win, fight me) then you don't have to worry about any tax increase a Democrat is generally going to suggest.

Or "if they raise taxes on the rich and corporations, they will just charge us more" as if that doesn't already happen

I'll take that on. Find yourself a good-sized asian grocery store. You've got a 99 Ranch near you, that'll do. Look for Sapporo Ichiban ramen, Tonkotsu flavor. While you're there you might as well buy stuff to put in it, but for a baseline instant ramen it's hard to beat.

...When those union guys start bitching about Democrats raising taxes, do things like point out how Trump's tax policy actually raised it for middle working class in New York...

This is from The Hill, published in 2021:
Income data published by the IRS clearly show that on average all income brackets benefited substantially from the Republicans’ tax reform law, with the biggest beneficiaries being working and middle-income filers, not the top 1 percent, as so many Democrats have argued. A careful analysis of the IRS tax data, one that includes the effects of tax credits and other reforms to the tax code, shows that filers with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $15,000 to $50,000 enjoyed an average tax cut of 16 percent to 26 percent in 2018, the first year Republicans’ Tax Cuts and Jobs Act went into effect and the most recent year for which data is available. The Hill article link

Taxes are a huge issue. The union guys I know, they work with Hispanic and Black co-workers. They live in neighborhoods with a mixed population. This isn't a problem. Tell them about "the border," they shrug. They're not emotional about this. It's a fixed belief, a given.

"I'll vote for trump. Taxes are crazy...Hey what's on HBO tonight? Did you see the flick last night? That was awesome!"

;)
