Face, meet leopard. Leopard, meet face.

The really weird thing for me is that they voted for a rapist - as the judge said he was - I really don't know how people got past that to vote for him. Now perhaps if both candidates were rapists I would have had to hold my nose and vote for one of them but since that wasn't the case that one fact should have excluded him from anyone's consideration.
But he moves to punish the people they want to see punished, so he therefore embodies the rule of law.

Just like with nazi Germany, when the madness stops you'll find a lot of voters parrotting "I never voted for this. How could I have known?" when all along during the regime they're at best disinterested in facing the evils they see every day.

There'll always be a lot of "good apolitical burghers" around when the dust settles.
Yeah, seen the German baker scene in the Band of Brothers episode "Why We Fight"?

All valid points, but the end result is the same either way.

Trump said he would do this, they voted for him, and now he’s doing it. They chose it and they should bear every bit of consequence for their choice.

Everything else is window dressing.
But were they even aware he was advocating for these things? Some people are remarkably bad at getting any sort of information about who they vote for. I imagine a good chunk of the "base" simply voted for Trump because he was a Republican and they only thing they know from watching Fox News and OANN is the Democrats are evil and out to destroy their way of life. Hence their only option was to vote for Trump.

Fun fact about me: Zero is the amount of bending over backwards I am willing to do to excuse Trump voters.

Trump announced loud and clear, exactly what he wanted to do. The heard what he wanted to do and liked it, that's why they voted for him. The fact is that certain entitlements they have historically benefited them made them feel that they would not be affected by it. The problem is that a lot of the poor whites are blind to the fact that they many of them also benefit from social nets however hard they deny it.

Understanding is not the same as excusing. It would be beneficial to understand what makes these people tick so this sort of thing can be prevented in future. If there is a future.
Stolen from myself last year:
MAGA Republicans are painfully easy to understand. They have come around before over and over again throughout history. They want a world where they can tell other people what to do, and no one can tell them what to do. That's it. That's all fascism has ever been. All the rest is just BS rationalizations and excuses.

There's only so many times you can go around their intellectual merry-go-round before you realize you are not actually getting anywhere.

No one forced them to watch only fascist propaganda.

But is there really any mystery to understanding them? There was an SNL skit right after the first election and they remarked about how America "really is racist". Has that changed? That's a serious question. People can lie and say it's about the economy, or trans, or whatever the ◊◊◊◊ it is they're making up right now, but even that is still just hate. That's it. They're hateful people. They hate everyone different from them and that's all there is to understand.

I'm with Johnny Karate, maybe the first time I'd try to "understand" a bit more. At this point, ◊◊◊◊ Trump voters. All of them. There is no appealing to them or rationalizing with them. They're trash, the lot of them and I will go through some financial inconvenience if it means that Trump's policies make their lives worse. I want that for them, as spiteful as that may be. They earned it, and they voted for it. I hope they bask in it.

And if their lives are worse they'll hate the immigrants, liberals and atheists who made it that way even more and love Trump and the GOP even more for fighting the good fight against the Deep State

And since it's a no-win situation, ◊◊◊◊ them all.
The trouble is that they will double down and be even more determined to vote for MAGA and the GOP whilst at the same time the voter rolls are being purged, the districts redrawn and voting made more difficult for the "wrong" sort of people.

I'm beginning to wonder whether it's wholly or at least partly deliberate at this stage. Hurt the poor white voters more and they'll be sure to turn out and vote for you. Of course it could just be a happy coincidence that the policies that make billionaires even richer and less accountable are the same ones that keep the masses keen to vote for you.

Yeah, as I keep saying, I was ready to forgive and move on when he lost in 2020. I naively expected his followers to see how horrid his regime had been and to move on. Instead he incited a coup while conservative media and his cultish followers dug their heels in for authoritarian fascism. ◊◊◊◊ them sideways. I'm done making excuses for them.

They're going to do that anyway. A ton of them got sent to jail because of J6 and it didn't even make a dent. Make their lives worse enough and maybe they won't be able to vote anymore.

How do they double-down more? They already did it. It's done. The people that are voting for MAGA are voting for MAGA. There are no fence sitters. The only reason Trump won was because the Dems didn't get the voter turnout that they needed, but Trump didn't get a ton of new voters. Yes, voter rolls and districts and voting being more difficult is going to happen. It's happening right now, and they're cheering it on.

Probably. They're stupid. That's my entire point. I'm not going out of my way to understand the mind of a moron.

Echoing what other posters have already pointed out: How much more understanding do we need? It's been a decade of this and we seem to be beating the bushes to find any explanation other than the plainly obvious one.

There have been (and are) nations in Europe that have had right - wing surges. I think maybe we need to start looking at how moderates and progressives have and are dealing with it there. What has worked and what hasn't.

Wholeheartedly agree. I really do not understand this mindset that says we must find a way to placate these people or it will somehow get worse.

First of all, placating people who hate you and are actively trying to harm you is a losing proposition. It never works.

And secondly, as you pointed out, we've already arrived at worse. This is the endgame. They want our children to die of preventable disease, they want our cities occupied by the military, they want to dispense with the rule of law and make us all subject to their supreme leader. This is all happening right now.

If that's not the worst case scenario, what is?
