Of course it's not the kind of abortion you mean when you make a law about abortion, but ignorant people make stupid laws all the time, and this is one, because the treatment for an ectopic pregnancy is an abortion. Of course it's a reasonable and proper and essential one, just as it is or should be (but is not always) reasonable proper and essential to abort a dead fetus. But what constitutes a medical emergency is, by the very nature of the law, no longer in the hands of doctors, but in the hands of politicians, who have reserved for themselves and their associates the privilege of countering the decision of doctors with non-medical, religious moralizing. It is not the doctors' fault if the law evinces an ignorance of what is and is not an abortion.

You don't have to ascribe specific malicious intent to a law that is stupid and badly thought out, especially if the overall, non-specific intent is malicious. And you can't un-stupidify a law by imagining how you might have written it.

She has lived in the US for years and now that's she's got a taste of the cruelty she happily wished on others, she's suddenly remembered her Canadian roots.
