Businesses have been doing this for years. There are hundreds or thousands of businesses that proudly display their ideological positions. This isn't new - the only thing that borders on new is that some businesses that aren't explicitly churchy are now emboldened to express support for conservative ideals. Businesses have been hollering their progressive bona fides for years with minimal consequence.

I doubt that they have "now" been "emboldened to express support for conservative ideals" and "proudly display their ideological positions." It is much more likely that it never occurred to them that it might be a sure way to lose customers or that they may even have been deliberately led to believe that only the weak of mind would have access to the “the anti-woke online marketplace,” as mentioned in post 641.

And those proud emboldened conservatives may only just now be discovering the consequences. I can recommend the YouTube video from The Humanist Report about this phenomenon:

Farmers, who voted for President Donald Trump, are now feeling "helpless, frustrated, and angry" after the administration made cuts to services they rely on, according to the Washington Post.

Vegetable farmers Jacob and Jennifer Thomas have taken more than a 10 percent hit to their bottom line after Trump “abruptly cut $1 billion from two programs that supplied local produce and meat to schools and food banks across the country.”

“The financial insecurity makes my depression worse,” third-generation farmer Jacob Thomas told the Post.

Then, the administration also cut a $8,000 grant, which would have allowed them to build a new greenhouse.

Later, their plans for “a new warehouse and expansion of their farm store are up in the air because of the administration pausing, then unpausing a $750,000 federal agriculture grant,” the Post reports.

Many in the area voted for Trump, but the good feelings are starting to fade, giving way “to a growing sense of helplessness, frustration, and anger,” the Post wrote.

“For every farmer I’ve talked to, this has been earth-shattering and life-changing,” Bryan Zesiger, a winemaker, told the Post. “I don’t know what they were supposed to achieve, but from our perspective, you just hurt a lot of people.”

What made them want "to hurt other people" in the first place? How did they get to that point?
Republicans have successfully convinced them that those 'other people' are hurting them.
And it's nothing new: Republicans and their backers have spent decades telling this lie.
Trump is not the one who came up with the idea and noticed that it could be used to win elections.
He just radicalized the message: "They're eating the dogs" etc.
Farmers ought to know that oligarchs and big corporations are the ones they are up against.
But farmers were never very smart. That they're using high tech rather than husbandry nowadays hasn't changed that.

A LOT of other Americans seemed somehow to resist the evil hypnosis rays from the Trump propaganda machine. Why not these "smart" people? Could it be...they aren't as smart as they thought they were?

There's lots of reasons why some people fall for propaganda while others don't. In this case, the propaganda played into insecurities that the Rightists had been fostering for years - decades, even. It's unevenly distributed, especially in the ◊◊◊◊◊◊-up American system of politics in which extreme partisanship is not only encouraged but the only way to play the game.

Historians have a word for Germans who joined the Nazi party, not because they hated Jews, but out of a hope for restored patriotism, or a sense of economic anxiety, or a hope to preserve their religious values, or dislike of their opponents, or raw political opportunism, or convenience, or ignorance, or greed.

That word is "Nazi." Nobody cares about their motives anymore.

They joined what they joined. They lent their support and their moral approval. And, in so doing, they bound themselves to everything that came after. Who cares any more what particular knot they used in the binding?

Especially because if suddenly the one policy they object to was reversed they'd immediately resume allegiance. "Trump's not supposed to cut our farm subsidies! We've been betrayed!" "The subsidies have been reinstated." "God bless Trump forever, let's go round up immigrants!"

Only up to a point. Many people have some realistic assessment of what their best interests are, and many also have enough humanity to consider the best interests of others. Xenophobia, racism, and the myth of bootstrapping American exceptionalism were already there. You can blame the propaganda machine for exploiting them, but it takes two to tango.
