Elizabeth Warren refuses to take DNA test

To demand someone dna test to prove their ‘race’ seems like a super creepy invasion of privacy. Creepy as all get out

Not that anybody actually demanded that. I would take the invasion of privacy concern a lot more seriously if Warren hadn't already made public claims about her race. If she'd never said anything at all about it, and for some reason the NY Post was asking her to prove she's Native American anyway? That would be creepy.

Asking someone to prove their own public claim about their race is... not really that creepy at all, when you think about it.

Anyway, if it still creeps you out, you should probably cancel your subscription to the NY Post.

Except that she didn't and doesn't go around making public claims about it except to rebut those that attack her over it.

The whole things was started by Scott Brown with his "She doesn't look Native American" claim in a senator candidates' debate based entirely on what was little more than a social media directory that very few of the public would have even known about.

From all appearances, Warren has never gone out of her way to push the claim, even though others in her family are quite active in Native American causes back in Oklahoma.

I think I split the difference between you, its kind of creepy to ask someone to prove their ethnicity with a DNA test, especially when the claim is so mundane.

She made a public claim, its not crazy to ask, "Is that really true?"

I still say almost nobody cares and those that say they do are just using it as an excuse. Folks like Logger will just add it to their excuses for voting against her and folks inclined to vote for her won't care.

Right. Let's discuss her policies, which are a bit further left than I'd like. I'm not a fan of Warren, though she represents me and comes from my home state.

I like a lot of what she says. I think she goes too far in many issues.

I don't care whether she has Native American heritage.

Those are fair arguments to make. Not whether she has 1/32 native American blood in her.

If her entry in the directory had said she had polish ancestry, would anyone be questioning it?

It depends. Is she a Native American with apocryphal family lore about a Pole in the woodpile some generations back? Is the Polish ethnicity something that universities are incentivized to celebrate in their staff? Has she ever gone on record saying she listed her Polish ancestry so that she could connect with other Poles in her community--and then never bothered to show up at any Polish Community Group meetings? Because yeah, then I might go so far as to refer to her as Elizabeth "Solidarity" Warren, and shorten it to "Solidarity" over time.

... And then some prog would come along and complain that I don't know what "solidarity" refers to, and why do I hate Lech Walesa so much?

The problem isn't really Elizabeth Warren's little white lie. She's simply the poster child for the entire "diversity" meme.

Except, no she isn't! I haven't seen her out there campaigning for Native American quotas or more control of Native American lands for Native Americans. She was even pretty quiet on the Dakota Access Pipeline, probably the major Native American issue of the last decade. From Warren's side of things all it seems to be is a family legend. As evidenced by a few of us here in the thread above, that isn't unusual in families. Now maybe Grandad was fantasising or was repeating myths from his own Grandad or even lying for the heck of it because he was a stubborn old coot. It might even be true. Warren didn't use it to advance her life in any way. The only people who have made an issue of this are people from the right of the political spectrum, and with many of them we can guess why (bigotry, intolerance, political advantage).

So far as I can tell, she didn't make a public claim. She checked a box on her college application, and got involved in a few things related to Native American perspectives in college. Nothing beyond that.

Someone else is making the claim as a strawman, in order to disparage her and engage in some high-quality character assassination for no particularly good reason.

She was listed as a minority professor. That is a career benefit.

What I find interesting in this is the incredibly weird racism on display.

On the one hand, they delight in the opportunity to indulge in the racist nickname "Pocahontas", but then they turn around and try to claim she isn't even Native at all.

Which is why the original gag was that Warren was Fauxcahontas.

 You can't seriously be accusing phiwum of Trump apologetics. That would require a rather substantial amount of not paying attention.

Indeed, I don't defend the use of the term Pocahontas. It is quite arguably racist, not to mention part of Trump's usual juvenile name-calling.

I was simply responding to Horatius's comment that he didn't get the ironic usage of the term. That particular feature I totally get. My reference to Einstein featured the same irony that Horatius was puzzled over, but without anything like what I take to be the racism inherent in "Pocahontas".

That Skeptic Ginger thought I was defending Trump is bizarre to me. Trump is not only the single worst serious candidate for President in my lifetime, but a truly terrible son of a bitch. Depending on the circumstances, I wouldn't be opposed to his removal from office (but I worry about the effect on the already seriously divided American political scene, so the allegations leading to impeachment have to be seriously beyond doubt, I think).

I thought your reference was perfectly clear, I don't understand how it could be reasonably interpreted as apologetics either. But then again, there's a lot of stuff that gets interpreted as Trump apologetics that seems baffling to me this past year or so.

I agree regarding him being the worst candidate in my lifetime, and a singularly distasteful person. I don't think he's quite the ravening lunatic that he's painted as, but yes, unquestionably icky.

My largest concerns over the last year have been with respect to the precedents being set - how a president is treated and portrayed, and the type of political and media manipulation that seems to be going on. I worry about what this means for the future of democracy in the US. I don't think Trump is a danger to it... but I do think that a lot of the methods being used are quite risky. They could easily be used against any president or politician, and the potential for abuse seems rather large.

I read that as you saying, Trump calling Warren Pocahontas was no more racist than you saying to your son, "You're a little Einstein," and clearly that was not how Trump was using the demeaning insult.

This was your post:
Nah, I get that. They're claiming she's adopting the mantle of Native American heritage, which they derisively identify with her pretending to be Pocahontas.
[It was] No different than when I disparage my know-it-all son by calling him Einstein.
I believe the issue is that of the implied pronoun referring to the most recent noun that preceded it. In this case it refers to your preceding noun(clause) (the antecedent to the pronoun).

IOW, speaking grammatically, your post said that you calling your son Einstein was the same as Trump calling Warren Pocahontas.

I see that is not what you meant and apologize. :o
