Elizabeth Warren - 1/32nd Cherokee? How?

I think it's phony to self-identify as Native American (or whatever) when one is 1/32 Native American. (If the checkbox said "Trace Native American Ancestory" then I take it back.) I also think her explanation is phony.

Mentioning fractional NA ancestory isn't the same thing as self-identifying as NA.

And misleading.

I'm not aware of such accusations (but I haven't followed the story much). I think she was phony regardless.

Well shut my mouth.

I know quite a few people that self identify as Hawaiians that maybe have 1/8 or even 1/16 Hawaiian blood.....I have never seen a problem with that.

Is there some minimum quantity?

In California, I think tribes generally set it at one-fourth in order to get casino money.

Seems like Ms. Warren engaged in what I call a sha-rod (because I don't say charade).

Ok but why is there some minimum standard to identify with being native american or anything else? You are or your not its a binary answer.

Who really gives a crap? I don't, and I'm 1/16th Choctaw; though I self-identify as white/Caucasian.

Meh

Wikipedia has an article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_quantum_laws

I'd love to get a chunk of summa that Indian money (casinos, or call centers).

I remember junior high and high school, there'd be some annoying kid who'd say "I'm one-thirty-fifth Cherokee." Sure, if you go back far enough that's the case for most people, who are also 1/16th rapist.

I'm curious about that as well.

Considering that twenty years ago, she was not in any governmental position nor was she running for one, who cares? Maybe she thought it was cool at one point and then decided she didn't want opportunistic jerks to try and make hay out of something that was true, but tangential to anything important.

Nah, that would never happen. There are no jerks opportunistic enough to latch on to something so trivial as whether or not she checked a box about the true fact that she's 1/32 Native American.

I say let's get her elected and then impeach!

Lemme get this straight. Your Cherokee by blood which means to most people that you are Cherokee BUT your not part of the modern Cherokee community so the other Cherokee dont consider you Cherokee?

Did I get that right?

Essentially. Just as other ancestors were from Italy but I'm American.

That, and if you try to apply for government set asides meant for Native Americans, you need to show either 1/4 IP, or tribal membership in many cases.

The dog story has a victim. The dog was hurt by that treatment. I'm still unclear about what Warren is supposed to have done wrong. Who was the victim?
Did she claim or get a benefit over someone else who actually met the legal criteria?

As already shown, claiming set asides for Native American status requires more than distant ancestral connections.

You mean like a story about a dog?

Yes because you are in a very secure glass house to throw that stone from. You ghave mentioned dogs in conjunction with the President on pretty much every thread where there was even the slightest possible relevence, and many threads where there was none.

Unless you were trying to prove Unabogie's point?

He had a point?

I hear Cherokees ate dog meat also.

The whole thing sounds rather dishonest to me. One-thirty-second Cherokee -- one great-great-great grandparent -- sounds pretty thin to qualify for "minority law teacher" status. But if it was true and defensible, then why stop claiming it in the legal directory (as she apparently did from 1986 to 1995)?

I really couldn't care less if she claimed she was from the planet Kylponighe while she worked there. What are her positions on the issues?
