Elizabeth Warren - 1/32nd Cherokee? How?

It is a "real issue" when a candidate for higher office lies, obfuscates and panders without a hint of remorse. Warren could have ended this weeks ago but has let it drag on, an on, and on for a month now. She has no one but herself to blame for the "real issues" not being discussed.

It's fodder for people who don't want the voters talking about the real issue.

Self-inflicted injury. As the old saying goes: "It's not the crime, it's the cover-up".

Scott Brown didn't do much to help the people of Massachusetts in the Senate. He acted the part of a good team player in the GOP obstructionist game.

Hold on. I thought the problem with the Republican Party is a lurch to the far right which makes them unwilling to compromise. But Scott Brown is a moderate Republican and yet he still gets labeled as an obstructionist. It makes me wonder if this "concern" over the current state of the Republican Party is in any way sincere... or if it's just a convenient way to label all Republicans as extremists.

Here is Scott Brown's conservative rating from the American Conservative Union, which rates Congresspersons based on their votes:
2010: 74%; 2011: 50%; Lifetime: 62%

The National Journal ranks his conservatism at 55.3%, making him the 45th most conservative member of the Senate.

Seems like Brown is the type of Republican that should be applauded for his bipartisanship... that is, if anyone truly cared about that sort of thing.

They only want moderate Republicans in GOP strongholds; in Democratic strongholds they want radical leftists.

If she had come clean early, we probably wouldn't have ever heard about the plagiarism either -- a point which I have yet to hear anyone really question her about.

Why am I confident that if their roles were reversed and Sen. Brown had as much evidence of dishonesty and plagiarism against him the media would be in his face screaming about how terrible this looks for a tenured professor at Harvard?

Scott Brown already starts from the position that he has has to atone for his record, unlike Warren who has nothing to contribute but false promises of diversity.

It is a totally new organization founded for the purpose of taking full advantage of the scandal.

Could it be . . . astroturf?

The leaders of the group appear to be partisan Republicans.

I don't know about their national political leanings, but they are well established in the controversial in-group politics of genealogy and tribe membership.

Thanks for link Brainster. My thoughts on the issue right now:

1. It still appears to me that the issue about Warren claiming Cheokee heritage is just routine political smear crap.

2. I think I underestimated the importance of the issue to this election. Although the polling that Brainster linked to suggests that the issue was of some importance to a significant part of the electorate other polling suggests to me that at most Warren could lose a per cent or two over this issue (She's actually up in the polls since the issue broke). However if she loses anything on the issue it might be enough to cause a loss for her given how close the race seems to be right now.

3. Warren has done an amazingly poor job of responding to what is a routine election smear strategy. Maybe this is because there is some unknown substance to the issue or more likely she just isn't good at politics and being good at politics is a qualification for the office and if she doesn't get better maybe it would be better for Massachusetts that she doesn't win.

4. The sophistication of the smear and the creativity that the anti-Warren folks have demonstrated in pushing this bit of clap trap is impressive. I suspect that the people pushing the smear realize that it is largely without substance and it won't effect the decision the vast majority of voters will make about this election, but they would be overjoyed if they captured 2 per cent of the electorate with the smear and right now with Warren's assistance that target might be within range.

ETA: Of course, the smear Warren team still has the fact that she bought and sold some houses and made a profit. This might just be enough to keep the leftyseargents of the world home on election day or at least enough to get them to vote for their favorite third party socialist but it's hard to see how this issue is going to hurt Warren enough to make up for a loss of the Cherokee ancestry issue if for some reason that doesn't work out at all for the smear team. Too bad for them they can't find something like a lesbian affair in her background, that would liven up the election and they might easily get a few points out of it.

Warren lies for political gain = smear. Got it.

Just because it seems so fashionable let's repeat it so it sinks in:

smear, smear, smear, smear.

I feel better already.

I've gotta hand it to Republicans; they're good at playing this game. Go for the knee-caps.

Judging just by the headlines and the persistence of this thread, I'd say they managed to blow this "scandal" all out of proportion.

But yeah, whatever, Ronald Reagan's the greatest President ever/Iran Contra was no big deal.

Only if the other woman is ugly. If she's hot, then Warren would probably pick up votes. At least among men. :p

You might be on to something here Ziggurat. Maybe Warren's campaign should get a rumor going about a Warren affair with Angelina Jolie that led to the break up of her marriage with Billy Bob Thorton. This might easily deflect criticism of Warren for repeating a family claim about American Indian heritage that may or may not be true and it might even help her get back some of the support she lost when the leftyseargents of the world found out that she had bought and sold some houses at a profit. I don't know about every Massachusetts voter but just typing Angelina Jolie has gotten me thinking about voting for Warren.
