Merged [Ed] Convicted Lockerbie bomber released

On another board the IRA was mentioned and a number of US politicians came into the frame Ted Kennedy was one I think. Several of the US posters were keen to extradite him to us there and then

:boggled: Funny old world.

Im not trying to exonerate some sections of the Irish American diaspora from criticism regarding support for the IRA.
Opinions on that issue seemed to change pretty quick after 9/11.

Just a CBS poll internet poll shows 95% to 5% against the release of the mass murderer.

It sure seems that the majority of the families of the victims share that sentiment as well.

Without wishing to be nitpicky the poll is linked to the story which kicks off by erroneously calling Megrahi the bomb mastermind. If it was Libya that was involved then Megrahi's role as a security service agent would have been relatively minor. He wouldn't have planned anything.

I note in the piece though that a couple of the US relatives do not have a issue with the release. So as I said one cannot make assumptions about either group of relatives.

On a separate issue I had a trawl through the world wide media response to this story to see if the reaction was as dire as predicted. I was actually quite surprised at the reactions - much less negative than I expected.

Im sure quite a few countries would be happy to see someone who inflicted large civilian casualties against the USA, walk free on compassionate grounds.
Whats your point?

I was talking about Germany, Austria, etc., our peers and friends, not sodding Iran or North Korea.

Anyway someone, maybe not here, said that Scotland's stock in the world would plummet as a result of the decision but the reverse seems to be true.

I hope Austrians like Whisky.
And maybe you can expect an influx of lederhosen clad tourists in Edinburgh.
Be optimistic, thats the main thing.

You're in great company with Germany in regards to setting free terrorists to Libya. West German President Willy Brandt released the surviving 1972 Munich Olympic PLO terrorists Jamal Al-Gashe and his two buddies. Scotland should be proud to be included in this elite fraternity.

Well, no vote of no confidence, the opposition can't get a majority. Some opposition MSPs breaking ranks and agreeing that the decision was the right one. American tourists interviewed in the streets of Edinburgh saying that whatever politicians are up to doesn't concern them.

BBC editorialising that reports of the end of the world (or at least the part of it that happens to be Scotland) were somewhat exaggerated.

In other news, the CIA have been torturing prisoners again. I'd rather be the compassionate one getting flak from the torturers, than the other way round.

Rolfe.

Thats fortunate isnt it?
It wont, at least until the next election.
Doesnt make it any less damaging to the SNP or Scotlands reputation though.

Sorry, but picking on innocent holidaymakers trying to enjoy their time in Edinburgh, who probably have no clue about what has just occurred?
This really smacks of desperation.

I wear lederhosen....well mainly at weekends obviously.

Point to a country that it is OK for us to be friends with - you guys are going to find something picky about all of them aren't you :boggled:

Rudolph Hess was crazy about Scotland. Being friends with the U.S. is not high on your list? Did you guys think maybe we would take Abdel Baset al-Megrahi off your hands if you were expending too much of your resources to keep him confined in prison?

I have no problem with either of those countries.(apart from that thing that went on 60 years ago).
I love sausages.
Using them as some kind of litmus test for world opinion about this subject is slightly daft though.
They arent well known for impartiality when it comes to the US looking after its own citizens.
They prefer to rely on the US to look after everyone elses.

I will try France, Spain, Russia? (meh, maybe not Russia) I could try Korea - they are a boom market for whisky.

Edit: deliberating avoiding Arab countries cos I think they might be biased.

Oh, I see Jackson's death was a homicide so I guess our 5 minutes of fame are over.

The coroner's office has not published its findings regarding the singer's death.

It has also declined to comment on a report from the Associated Press news agency that an unnamed police source says the coroner has ruled Jackson's death was a homicide.

This explains a lot about your problems with understanding press reports.
