Dog consumption

Actually, dogs are mostly quite intelligent. However, it's a juvenile intelligence-- they're quite dependent. But that's another topic.....
So are pigs. But that is not the same intelligence one sees in whales and dolphins.

I'm almost certain the point of Riayn's post was that we have no outrage as a society over dogs being killed in shelters and thus outrage over eating dogs is inconsistent, not whether the reason for that is that we don't care enough, are incompetent, or face an overpopulation problem.

I understand (and agree with) the point of the argument, but the argument that was made was flawed.

Dear OP,

Are you aware that millions of dogs are killed in the US shelters every year? These dogs are not used to feed hungry families but are simply disposed of because our culture overbreeds and abandons them.
Are you outraged about this? Or did you conveniently forget about this fact?

You bet your butt I am! I am against all kinds of Dog abuse, and dog consumption.

The thing is with dog consumption: People can control that. People can't control dog's in shelters here, due to the fact that most people are sick

Complete and utter BS. You seem to pretend toward having some sort of moral high ground here, but all your argument seems to be showing me is complete laziness when evaluating the culture closest to you while demanding complete change to those you obviously have no understanding of.

You don't believe that I speak out for our fellow canines? You bet your *** I do. Do you think i am happy about any of this crap going on in the world? The planet's most common pet is being used as food in underdeveloped countries? Why do they have to eat our pets?

No, I don't think you're speaking out for anything other than your own ignorance. You sure as hell aren't speaking for my dogs, or any of the dogs that I actively take part in rescuing or re-homing. Instead, you seem to be directing your outrage at "brown people" in other countries and using some piss-poor reasoning to do so.

I am not attacking the people because they are a different race, no, i am attacking them for consuming man's best friend, which holds a special place in most of the world's hearts. This may sound ridicolous, but if people are allowed to eat dog's and other mammals, then it is only fair to add humans to that menu, right?

the only thing keeping me from eating the neighbors dog, it would not even make a decent sammich......

beyond that, you eat ig, you eat bugs, you eat dog, you eat spinach, deal with it.

No, No one should have to deal with it, especially if it consuming America's most loyal and frequent pet

A faulty appeal to popularity and a red-herring equivocation.

You're not doing any better in your argument. Humans eat domesticated animals, and different people eat different things. You have yet to justify why we here in the West should go telling people elsewhere how they should eat when we do the exact same thing by eating animals considered sacred, let alone our own spotty track record in the West regarding animal welfare in the first place.

In other words, at this point your biggest priority ought to be explaining how your emotional appeals aren't hypocritical nonsense.

The dogs being consumed aren't coming from America. Any more false claims you'd like to make?

This is a poor argument. The vast majority of dogs killed in shelters every year are due to outdated administration, poor organization, and lazy methodologies. <snip>

There definitely are criticisms that can be levied against "our culture" with regard to our own treatment of animals, and accusing the OP of hypocrisy sure has merit on that point. However, using the claim of overpopulation is a mistake.
I think your points are well made except for the criticism of Riayn's question to the OP.

At least a part of Makaya's outrage at dog consumption has been the numbers slaughtered. (He claimed that "Statistics" argued his point somehow.) I think it's legitimate to ask whether the outrage only extends to eating them or if he has a problem with the millions of dogs that are slaughtered in shelters. Regardless of the arguments made for why shelters kill dogs, the fact remains that some 5 million dogs are killed this way in the U.S..

It's reasonable to ask whether 15 million dogs consumed worldwide is outrageous but 5 million killed in shelters in the U.S. is acceptable.

What? You think the dogs killed in shelters are somehow accidental deaths?

Of course people control the 5 million dogs killed each year in U.S. shelters.

Well said. Ditto. Amen.

ETA: Another way of putting it is this: Makaya, do you have any way of establishing a priori (that is, independent of cultural definitions) between domesticated animals kept for food and those kept as pets?

You keep repeating that the dog is "man's best friend" but even that phrase alone shows your cultural bias. According to this essay, the phrase is believed to have arisen around 1855. This forum post agrees that it originated in late 19th Century Missouri, but puts it at 1869.

So you should really quit repeating that phrase as if it proves anything. Cultures differ, and they also differ on their view of the dog.

What's not reasonable is propagating the "overpopulation" myth, but I accept that's a different argument.

Do you honestly believe that? How about you travel to the Midwest and go visit puppymill where dogs are kept in cages and continuously bred until they die just to provide puppies for pet shops. Puppies which are a higher risk of ending up in a shelter because of 'impulse buys' than dogs are who are brought from registered breeders.
Go research this topic and come back and tell me that dogs are in shelters because "most people are sick" and this is something we can not control. If we stopped the sale of dogs in petstores, this would dramatically decrease puppymills and in turn the numbers of dogs that end up in shelters.

GreNME, trust me I don't believe anything that PETA says, they are absolute crackpots in my mind and yes, I am aware that the numbers of dogs enuthanised in shelters has dropped dramatically. However, this is not due to humans not overbreeding dogs, but the fact that more shelters have become no-kill and the increase in wonderful rescue organisations who pull dogs out of shelters and re-home them. The awful fact remains though that due to puppymills we are overbreeding dogs and these pups are the dogs that make up the majority of the pound population. This is why I support banning the sale of dogs in pet stores.

OK, look, no one here agrees, your best move is to go find all the people that do, and join them in your quest, instead of wasting your time here.

Riayn, please check out the book I linked to. I won't derail this thread, but the reality is that you're wrong about the "overpopulation" claim. The problem is much less simple with a much less simple answer than just outlawing dog breeding.

One of my Dogs, Shelley, a mini dachsund, was rescued from a Puppy Mill, which we shut down by forwarding a report to the Police , so I am familiar with Puppy mills. Dog consumption is not the only thing i want to end, I want Animal cruelty to end in general! That includes Dog fighting, Whale slaughtering, etc.

Why is dog consumption "animal cruelty" but cow consumption isn't?
