DeSantis Would Really Like to Request a Personal Army

I would say that unless we're the state's legislature or one of its voting citizens, we presumably have no real interest in the question and can happily go about our lives without knowing or caring anything at all about the reasons given.
While I don't think we can do much, and we should not be in a position to do much, not caring is a different matter. If, for example, some people are right and the purpose in this case is to install a fascist personal police force to nullify federal jurisdiction, endanger the health of many, and threaten civil rights (which would belie the reasons given), I think we should care, even if we're far from Florida and know none of the victims of either the deceit or the result personally, especially if the person committing the deceit has national aspirations, or if other governors follow suit.

Of course you may differ on this, but I would expect a person of such insularity not to bother to comment very often on much of anything outside his own jurisdiction, and I have not so far noticed that tendency.

Sure, if. Just like if a frog had wings it wouldn't bump its ass when it hopped.

But frogs don't have wings, and those people are wrong.

Well, I certainly hope you're right. As I have said, this is an action other governors have done, and not sinister in its own right, and there''s not much we can or should do about it. But I think it's reasonable, if one looks on DeSantis with great disapproval and suspicion, as many do, to pay attention and to care what he does.

You may not like what he does, but DeSantis isn't an idiot. Even if you have no faith in what he wants to do, he's not clueless about what he can do. And he cannot challenge federal authority militarily, certainly not with a measly $3.5 million budget. And even within the state, he cannot use them as a police force to do things that his actual police force cannot already do.

Really, the worst thing this might turn out to be is a waste of money. There is no larger threat beyond that.

Not sure what the legal status of the Yahoo Brigade would be. Are they civilian, or military when deployed? Other State's Guards are volley unless activated, then receive federal pay just like the National Guard would.

So hypothetically: are they civilian or military when deployed to deal with, say, a riot? Are they bound by military RoE or have civilian limitations?

I try not to get too worked up over conspiracy theories. I mean, you know me: I'll happily argue that flat-eartherism doesn't really matter and the earth is pretty much flat for almost everyone almost all the time anyway.

He's requesting like 17 large per volunteer soldier. That could make a platoon of Manchurian Robocops in Florida. Think of the fun.

You are correct. DeSantis isn't an idiot. That makes him much more dangerous than Trump, who is an idiot.

I am not nearly as optimistic about it being no threat as you are.

If it was a Democratic governor, he'd definitely be all up in arms about this.
