Derren Brown Show

The clips on youtube aren't from those shows, but from television productions, and not all of those include a denial of using stooges. I've yet to see on a public forum anyone Derren's randomly selected give their own full description of what occurred. A non-stooge should have no problem with that. If Bob Klase thinks that Derren doesn't stoop to camera/video trickery, perhaps he's not seen Derren's lame "prediction" of the UK lottery draw.

Of course if you have proof Derren uses stooges go right ahead and share. Like wise that the lottery was spilt screen.
How many years have you been peddling same schtick?

Careful observation of one of the balls betrays movement as the maipulated half of the screen changes to real time

It is possible to become a stooge without realising it.

I have met him a few times over the years at various magic events but the only time I have seen Derren perform live was when he was filming for one of his TV shows. The trick he did was lame, only in the editing (when the show aired) did it look anywhere near impressive. It was not camera trickery, it was clever editing.

I'm not knocking him though, I think he has done a lot of good to promote magic in a fresh way to a jaded audience. It's just a shame that people don't see the woo is part of the trick.

I assume you're referring to the post which included

I can't say definitely that it wasn't staged, because I don't know (and haven't even seen the specific things you're talking about). But Darren is not known for massive staging or video editing tricks in his shows so I would not assume that's the only other possibility.

You're applying the same reasoning as people who go to psychics and say "there was just no way she could have known that" when in fact there are many ways she could have known it. You just don't know all the possibilities and disregard them.

I didn't say Darren "doesn't stoop to" anything. By implying that I said "Darren doesn't stoop to camera/video trickery" you demonstrate the same faulty reasoning that leads you to assume that not knowing how something is done proves it was video trickery.

No such implication was intended. That particular show (and the lottery prediction in particular) came across as lame, as the build-up had led people to expect something more (and better). He didn't even offer proof (just his word) that the lottery draw on that occasion wasn't pre-recorded. For some reason, the lottery show doesn't specifically claim that the draw itself is done live for the (at least partially) live midweek show, whereas for the weekend show it is emphasized that the draw is live.

is complete garbage. . . . can't understand what he's saying at 3:28 but whatever it is it's guessing. I'm sure the 3 ladies are part of the show.
At 3:28, Derren isn't saying anything. The last thing he'd said was "It is . . . 'my friends say I'd be really good for you'." (What a terribly cheesy chat-up line, by the way.)

Maybe Derren had asked the ladies if they would like to do an impromptu screen-test for his show (or a crew member had tipped them off as to what to do in order to appear on Derren's show). In that way, they are doing whatever he arranged beforehand, but are not professional actors. Such method's would avoid filming numerous attempts and discarding the unsuccessful ones.

The BBC also insists that its midweek draw is shown without a time delay. The only sleight of hand involved is the use of recorded applause. A spokesman said: 'The draw is independently verified, it is 100 per cent random and it goes out live.'

Or maybe he spoke to her friends or there was pre-show work(in a magic trick sense). Quit before it gets embarassing.

Almost all 'live' shows (i.e., not prerecorded hours before) are actually broadcast in delay so that unexpected occurrences can be cut out if necessary.

I've seen the Russian roulette on a faster computer than before, and the final shot was still out of camera view, with no associated smoke visible.

Rubbish.

You need glasses.

I was under the impression that all or most of the rounds, were blank. If you remember he demonstrated the effect of a blank round on a plastic bottle. Right but your skull is tougher than that, it's been known to deflect real rounds! I guess the worst that could have happened was a burn. With regards the sack was that a real round? If so perhaps it was the only real round. The loaded chambers could also have been determined from the weight balance of the gun. Certainly nothing to do with the other participants.

Form memory the bottle/blank was shown to highlight what would happen if they WERE blanks. You want to put a blank bullet to the test against a skull? YouTube is thattta way>

I don't know what type of blanks DB used, but most blanks are deadly up close; those used by the military can kill if pointed at the head within a few feet.

Just so. Even though the round isn't bulletted, an awful lot of material comes out of the barrel very fast. When I was in the cadets during a blank fire exercise one of the guys took a tiny fragment of casing in his shoulder. Scared the hell out of everyone when he fell over.

Thus was the irony of all the UK media claiming the bullets were blanks;like a blank pointed against your skull is harmless kids so go try!

Well, to be honest the russian roulette trick is just a takeoff of the old bullet catch, and I'm fairly sure I know how it's done. Obviously, I won't reveal anything, but it's really not that hard.

It would be impressive indeed if you know how "it's" done since there is no single method to either the bullet catch or the Russian Roulette, both of which are generally not performed in the same manner. If I know how Larry Becker does his Russian Roulette I do not automatically know how Derren Brown does his, and certainly don't know how Penn and Teller do their bullet catch.

Isn't that funny though? I mean, one of the tricks that gets the biggest reaction for me is 'not that hard'. What is it about magic that makes me wish the tricks I really sweated on, the ones with the difficult sleights, were more impressive?

A big stunt/illusion is always going to be more impressive, thats the point of them

What I was getting at was that some of the effects that get a big reaction when I do them are technically very easy. It just seems backwards, that's all.

I know it has to do with how I look at a trick verses how the public sees it, but you'd think there would be some parallel between the work you do to master something and the 'payoff'.

As far as Darren Brown goes, his NLP schtick has penetrated the pubic mind enough where I can use it as the basis for a patter script.

Well, I occasionally have a big fat personal delusion under which I try to use "NLP" on people. It generally doesn't work out well. My personal patter schtick works out better, plus a couple sponge balls and a "pick a card, any card"...
