Dennis Rodman’s buffoonery in North Korea edges into treason

Silly and slightly crazy, but I'm not seeing "treason" here.

Indeed! Dennis is sadly crazy but lovable. G-d gave him a great talent. Without that talent and money, he would be living under a bridge. Basketball Diplomacy can't hurt and might help. Jong should let Bae go and thank Dennis. :D I bet Jong is saying "How do I get into this with Dennis, too and how do we get rid of him"?

Dennis is a hoot. Certainly brings a laugh into my life.

I just hope for the sake of peace that Kim Jong Un isn't as silly as D.R.
I spent a year in Seoul with the US Army and I still have fond memories of the Korean people and their open hearted nature. Too bad North Korean leaders would not have concern for those people. Or sadder, their own people.

I wonder if Kenneth Bae's loved ones find Rodman to be silly and lovable.

Dennis did not get Bae into his situation and looks like won't be getting him out. Bae's loved one can't pin anything on Dennis, however much they wish they could. Despite any of our own personal circumstances, life goes on.

Dennis reminds me of what a small number of dictators do to validate themselves with their people, that is puff in the face of the US just light enough to avoid a response. So DR lightly steps over the fault line between east and west and tries to exploit our forbearance.

I'm calling BS on Rodman going to rehab. This is a set-up for an excuse later on.

The excuse he will be giving in a few month's time will be "I went over to North Korea and said all of those things because I was drunk at the time".

No, you weren't. And if you were, that had nothing to do with it. Don't blame it on the alcohol.

I haven't seen anyone say DR got Bae into his problems. Where did you get that from? What has been said is DR acting like an ass clown doesn't help the situation. Nor do Bae's family find DR silly and lovable. They are 2 separate issues.

He's already made that excuse.

"I had a dream..............." .

He's already made that excuse.

And it's complete nonsense. People conveniently blame everything and anything on alcohol. It's the go-to excuse for any celebrity scandal.

Sometimes it is valid, don't get me wrong.

Other times (such as this one), you have to roll your eyes. I bet his publicists made him go to rehab so soon after the trip was over in a last ditch effort to save his career. This is all for the sake of face-saving and damage control.

Alcohol doesn't account for his behavior. He was always an *******. He was an ******* when he was sober, too.

Speaking of Bae, he appeared at a "news conference" the other day reading an obviously ghost-written statement asking the US to help get him out.

He's basically being held hostage, and the "conference" was the North Koreans admitting as much.

Fortunately for him, this means that they're probably treating him ok. Just from looking at him, he's obviously not in one of their gulags; he's well-fed and hasn't been beaten to a bloody pulp. I suspect he's being held in a "guesthouse" not unlike the one Laura Ling and Euna Lee were confined to. Far from comfortable, but not horrible either.

They'll set him free when they get what they want, which is for the US to make a big show of sending a delegation to negotiate his release.

What Rodman is doing is in the best interests of the US and the Western World. He won't be fooling anyone that matters. And might, in future, come in handy in some capacity.

For all I know, he's being secretly sponsored now by the CIA.
.
.
Has anyone considered the fact that maybe he wants what he says he wants, and that is to bring some element of acceptable American culture to the enslaved people of North Korea. (or what his spokesman says . . ., can hardly understand rodman myself)

Rodman is not smart, not articulate, and not very apt to consider how he presents himself, but I can guarantee he understands that if he came out publicly against the regime that any chance of gaining cultural acceptance for anything, basketball or otherwise, in that country is not going to happen.

Then further what would be achieved by Rodman condemning Kim?

Nothing.

The People, capital P, are the ones who will eventually lead that country out of enslavement, not Dennis Rodman, and not any of you. That can happen many ways, one of which is shifting perceptions of Western cultures.

On the surface its easy to spit vitriol, and condemnation Rodmans way, it is much harder to think deeply and ask considered questions about how North Korea can be changed from the inside out, and if this has any bearing on the subject.

That kind of change takes time. In a hundred years if North Korea becomes a stable and productive nation that threw off its shackles some historians may just point out that even the simple minded Rodman played a role.

Maybe I am too optimistic, but nothing happens without believing it can.
