Dave Herman retired disc jockey arrested

I was having online conversations back in 1994 . . . and I don't think I was one of the first...

I wasn't having on-line chats in 1994 but it doesn't seem that long ago. Like several of my friends I was eagerly awaiting the release of Windows 95.

Windows 95 was going to be beyond cool. It was going to be able to do anything. Anything!

1. 77 years old doesn't mean you're demented.
2. 77 years old doesn't mean you can't be a sexual predator.
3. 77 years old doesn't mean you should be ineligible for prison.
4. Go police.

I'm 67 and I wouldn't do such a thing and I hope ten years from now I still won't do this sort of thing.

Presumably the vices you still nurse at 67 are the vices you've nursed all your life, and you'll still be nursing them at 77.

It's probably more luck than anything else that you don't share this particular vice with Dave Herman. I doubt he magically transformed into someone with this particular vice sometime in the past ten years.

I'd like to see some adult pretend to be a 15-year old girl and entrap someone who is in law enforcement into the crime of entrapment.

1978? That would make him or her about 35 today as they were born a year after me. I don't think the Net was even around when I was a kid. Were you conducting this conversation on DARPA or something to be so concerned about being thought a kiddie-fiddler?

I was born in 78, and I was on the internet in the mid-90's, which would have made me around 16 or 17 at time, so it's certainly plausible.

But I only had a 2400bps modem, which was OK for connecting to BBS's, but too slow for a Windows internet connection (you needed a 9600bps modem or higher for that). Instead, I had a UNIX-shell internet account that charged 1 cent per minute. It was text-only, so I didn't use the web much (Lynx is a horrible browser interface), which meant I spent a fair bit of time on IRC and USENET... when I wasn't too busy playing on a MUD over Telnet. In fact, I've recently gone back to playing on a mud, sometimes directly over Telnet instead of using a MUD client.

First, that doesn't even make sense.

Second, why on earth would you want to entrap someone in law enforcement into committing a crime? Law enforcement personnel are imperfect enough already, without having people make a special effort to convince them to commit crimes.

This one is actually kind of old. I remember reading the complaint a couple of months ago (I think).

Unless something is very, very wrong with the complaint this guy is 100% dead in the courtroom. He needs to take the plea bargain 'cause there's no way he's not being convicted based on what the government says they have on him. His only chance is to negotiate for as little jail time as possible.

The complaint alleges some pretty sick stuff over a long period of time and it looks like there's plenty of documentary evidence showing both intent and knowledge of the girl's alleged age. They did let him backdoor himself into a trafficking charge, but from the language of the complaint I'd say that he deserved it. Not a good situation here.

Good evening.
I had a BBS on my Atari 400 back in the 80's. I would chat with people. I never did Compucash. My first was Genie. It allowed me to play games with people all over the world. IRC chat was all the rage. 300 baud, the information super driveway.

Do people looking for liaisons with minors use chat rooms to meet them?

Reports suggest so.

Are there people in chat rooms offering up minors for sexual purposes? Some how I don't think there are, but if I'm wrong, shouldn't the police be going after them?

Woman A and Woman B in the Ian Watkins case were both arrested and convicted.

Instead of undercover cops posing as pimps in chat rooms to arrest johns, shouldn't the undercover cops being posing as johns? To arrest the pimps?

Won't work. Look the way it works is that there are enough not very bright pedophiles out there that simply joining certian chat rooms and claiming to be underage will get you targeted. Then its just a matter of sorting out which ones are worth arresting.

There are other methods availible for going after pimps and it does happen:

No need to invoke magic, do we. Who we are is the result of brain state and process. There are cases where tumours have been associated with significant changes in personality and behavior including sex behavior.

Yes. And web fora and social networking of all forms.

Yes.

You'd be wrong.

Wow... Those are some groundbreaking points you bring up.

I think it could happen. My mother works in a nursing home. You'd be amazed what people can become when their brain begins to fail.

A good friend of mine.... His father was just released from jail after serving 4 months for molesting his 1 year old grand daughter. I think when they did psychological tests in him they found he was developing dementia... Brought on by age... and maybe drinking. I don't know maybe be always was attracted to infants.

Have you ever watched to catch a predator? I think I've seen that scenerio on there more then once.

Early or mid-90's, and I was otj and knew even then that any conversation on the 'net with anyone on any subject wasn't private.

OT, but my agency served an arrest warrant on a guy who sent porn to a juvenile female, who happened to be his employer's daughter, and he had used his work computer to send/store his porn.

Not every offender is this stupid, but it seems that prevs looking for kids adopted the 'net early on as a tool for finding victims and as a way to meet like-minded people.

ETA: the chance of a first timer offender being arrested for their first crime is about -0-, so look for more facts/victims to come forward.

I'm not seeing that. I look forward to you presenting some evidence to back it up.

This paper explores the question of whether law enforcement officers that pose online as children in order to set up meetings with pedophiles or encourage the transmission of child pornography are actually entrapping their targets. Link

Chat Room Arrests and Entrapment: Police officers often pose as minors in chat rooms and readily engage in sexual conversations with other chat room visitors. Link

Herrington and his partner, Mike Boymer, are Northeast Florida's only two police detectives working full time to catch the online predators before they can do more harm...by posing online as a preteen or as a father who was willing to allow his children to have sexual encounters with adults...some in the legal community question whether their methods are constitutional...
