CPAC 2021

Trump's CPAC speech is every bit as incendiary as his January 6 speech just before the insurrection. He's pushing the same lies about the election.

"We won the election twice"

"I may even decide to beat the Democrats for a third time"

He claims "it is undeniable" that election rules were "illegally changed"

"This election was rigged," Trump lies, prompting CPAC attendees to chant, 'you won! you won!"

Trump then attacks the Supreme Court for not overthrowing the election result for him

"The didn't have the guts or the courage to make the right decision," Trump says

He seems to suggest that if he hadn't been president, "hundreds of millions" of Americans would've died from Covid -- so basically the entire US population

Trump didn't arrive at the site until fifty minutes after his speech was supposed to begin.

Hearing President Trump describe Trumpism sums it up perfectly.

He’s got an ally in me!

Trump keeps on hinting on a 2024 run but dodges actually announcing.
IMHO a split ini the GOP is coming no matter what.

If it was intentional, it's the kind of Nazi symbolism that's easy to deny, and yet sends an obvious signal to the target audience.

They have literally erected a golden statue of The Chosen One at CPAC for them to worship.

Conservatives are a cult.
Gods, you weren't joking. My first thought was that it looked utterly garish. My second was that the ex-Führer probably loved it when he first saw it.

This is absolutely hilarious.

The National Anthem for CPAC 2021 was sung acapella by someone called Sailor Sabol. She was dreadful.

Pianist Larry Goldings has tried to add a piano accompaniment to her rendition, so you can see how many times she went off key, off tempo, off world. It's painful and funny at the same time

#thebestpeople.

edit: wow, you know the forum is old when it doesn't recognise hashtags.

Trump claims Biden is the most corrupt president in history.

Who's a pweshus widdle orange snow-fwake!

He just cycled through the usual classic lies until he found one they would cheer loudest for. Then he hammered that.

GOP seems intent on comitting suicide.

Are you serious? It's already a zombie corpse. The "committing suicide" thing happened years ago. The good news for the GOP is that millions upon millions of GOP voters apparently like zombie corpses more than actual humans.

I can easily see Trump getting the nomination for the GOP again. And I can easily see him being their best chance of winning in 2024. If they select a normal person, they probably lose because they will have pissed off their lunatic base to appease their non-lunatic fringe. If they try to go Trump-lite with somebody like Ted Cruz who just doesn't quite have the shamelessness to double down on his escape to Cancun, then they lose as well because he is hated by lunatics and non-lunatics alike.

Every year sports writers do a power ranking of teams immediately after the championship. The team that won the championship is ranked 1, and the team that lost is 2, and they kind of filter down from there. And then at the end there’s a caveat that until something changes these are the 2 best teams in the league, knowing full well the off season is going to bring a ton of changes and there’s a whole season of play coming up that’s going to reorder their list.

It makes it almost seem like a waste of time to speculate on who’s going to the next championship by people who have nothing better to do because the season is over.

Trump's speech at CPAC had the same lies that he has been telling for months.

Including the big one that the election was stolen from him. This is an obvious total lie with no basis and if interviews with certain CPAC officials anything to go on. A lie that is widely shared and believed and will continue to be believed, especially since Trump is continuing to push the lie. This false narrative is extremely destructive to the American electoral system and in my opinion will fuel efforts by Republicans and others to change the electoral system so that such fantasy "frauds" like that never happen again. (Far more stringent voter ID laws, reducing polling places in places "fraud" happens etc.) All of course to ensure that the "real" winners win.

I wonder will Republicans adopt Trump's mantra that if they lose it is only because of "fraud" and not because they actually lost?

The fact this dangerous man has not been kicked to the curb for what he tried to do after the November election says all too much about just how screwed up American politics are right now.

He didn't have a choice. He lost a lot of supporters between losing the election and after January 6th, and changing tack now would alienate the few he has left. Either way, by now it's patently obvious what he and his supporters are anyway. Can't get the toothpaste back into the tube.

I mean, he would have had a choice had he had a sliver of decency, but, well, what can I say, he's Trump.

It's very destructive, and the fact that so many Americans buy into his lies is incredibly discconcerting, too. It's a symptom of the deeply polarised postfact society the US has devolved into. Truth matters less and less. Worst thing is, I'm not sure where to even begin with digging the country out of that hole. If a bloody coup wasn't enough of a wake-up call to people, I don't know what will be.
