There is plenty to make fun of Christie. His physical appearance is just lazy.

Well, there's a great line buried in there. I know if I was doing a roast or political commentary, I'd jump on the "Hey, we've finally got a way to save money on polls. We can track Big Boy on Google Earth instead of Rasmussen. I mean, just think about it? We'd have a president you could see from the Space Station."

Obese presidents have done fine before, and I think it is the superficial issues that would be problematic more than the health issues. Being fat doesn't have much to do with how energetic you are, AFAIK. A really ugly person couldn't make it either. Television has been good and bad for elections.

I'm not saying health isn't a concern, but having the medical records of all candidates is important. You CAN have an obese person who is in good health, so one shouldn't be dismissive just for that reason.

Yeah, it's superficial. But superficial defines popular politics of the past five decades. You're not going to reverse that. Face it, when was the last seriously obese person even a losing candidate for national election?

Candidate for Veep? Heck if Clinton put on a few pounds there were jokes everywhere about his love of junk food. Christie can't even be considered a serious candidate because presently one out of every three people who hears of him possibly running says, "Who? Oh the fat guy from New Jersey."

Are we ready for another international joke as president?

And as to healthy fat people? Seriously healthy? Or "just not dying in your waiting room" healthy? Presidential types need to be active and able to handle stress well into their 60s and 70s and put in 20 hour days. Christie would be a complete rarirty if he has that kind of energy carrying that sort of bulk around.

I come from a family of fatties. My mom was nearly crippled by the time she was 50, from carrying around all that weight - her knees just couldn't do it any longer. Additionally, she had had renal failure, developed diabetes, and had a small stroke - all attributable to her weight. My sister died at 59 of heart failure brought on by diabetic coma. Mom was the lightweight at about 100/120 kilos; sis was closer to 140!
 
Considering that one third of Americans are obese, I fail to see why commenting about Christie's weight is anything but a cheap shot.
 
His overall health is an issue as far as the choice of his running mate would be concerned... would GOP folks really think the majority of the electorate would vote for a Christie/Bachmann or Christie/Paul ticket, for instance?

Of course not. The Democrats would run against his running mate, as they did with the 2008 election. He would have to pick someone reasonable for his running mate.

I basically agree, with the caveat that overall health is a legitimate issue. Most candidates release their health records for example. If weight is his only issue, and he doesn't have a host of other problems, like diabetes, due to the weight, I don't think it should be disqualifying.

I usually like Michael Kinsley, but I think he wrote a real stinker of a column on this issue.

His argument seems to boil down to its being bad symbolism for our country and a bad example for the children. He also claims that being fat is a character flaw. :rolleyes:

Watched CSPAN of Governor Christie's "No, I am not running" presentation.

The guy reminds me of Bill Parcels, in how he handles the media.
 
Well then,

according to Ann Coulter almost a year ago,

Mitt Romney will be the Republican candidate and he will lose.
