I believe that Christie knows that the GOP is not going to nominate a moderate under any imaginable circumstances.

So, if he wants a chance, all he has to do is defeat Biden in a primary race, and he should have no problem.

Just noticed that my response was also modded out. It would seem to suggest that I was an active in the exchange. Just wanted to clarify that I wasn't. Now lets get back to the topic at hand.

My feeling with regard to Christie is that he may actually sway a lot of those like RandFan who became disillusioned with thee direction that the GOP had taken post first term Bush Jr. and began to vote Democrat.

Yes, but it is the nominatablity (is that a word?) as a Republican that is the issue.

I am sure I could get him nominated as a Democrat. I know just how I would sell that brand.

I can't imagine why a supporter of (for example) Santorum would even consider him.

I'm not sure about Christie. He's not your typical Republican, that's for sure, but there is kind of sneakiness about him I don't trust.

One thing that bothered me about him was that when he gave a speech at the Republican convention, he talked mostly about himself rather than the candidate. He seems to be into self-promotion more than he is actually governing. We'll see, but for now, I reserve judgment.

I think he simply saw that it was a lost cause, and turned the lemon into lemonade.
 
My 2c worth from the wrong side of the pond:

Governor Christie faces a number of challenges if he wants the GOP nomination for 2016:

  • He's a moderate from a blue state with no obvious Tea Party credentials. All of these could be addressed by his choice of running mate it he should get the nomination but he would have to get it first
  • His comments regarding Obama's handling of the aftermath of Sandy could lead to claims of disloyalty
  • He's not very photogenic or telegenic

He's socially and fiscally conservative. While he may be sane compared to the rest of the GOP, he's certainly no Democrat and definitely wouldn't run as one.

Socially? Is he against gay marriage? Anti-abortion and contraception? Anti-immigration? I am not getting the "socially" conservative vibe from him, and I would find such positions to be odd in a fairly bluish state. But fiscally, yes.

He's anti-abortion with exceptions for rape and incest, he supports civil unions but is opposed to gay marriage (he vetoed a bill passed by the NJ legislature that would have legalized gay marriage). I'm not sure what his views are on immigration. All in all, while he may not be as socially conservative as the Todd Akin's and Santorum's of the world, there are not many social issues which he would find common ground with liberals.

Maybe there wasn't anything positive he could say about the candidate. :) I remember at some convention, he came out to defend a woman speaker (Michelle Bachman was it?) from a heckler. I was initially peeved, but looking at the vid, he (the heckler) was being a tool and Christie's actions seemed more governed by chivalry than any real support for the woman.
