Chris Christie

It doesn't matter how moderate he is, if he ever gets the Republican nomination to run for president he will swing hard right. The last two guys did it, why wouldn't he?

What... he will become a fundamentalist christian? I doubt it. And swing hard right is really open to interpretation, John McCain was telling people he was going to pay off underwater mortgages... or something like that... trying to get elected.

Thing is he can't GET the GOP nomination without the "Christian" right craziness.

And can't get elected WITH the "Christian" right craziness.

At least, that's what I perceive to be the GOP's biggest problem just now.

Nooooooo. He's a straight-shooter. He helped Obama. *Swoon*.

People love these take-charge *-holes in time of a crisis, or when they're on your team. It's unbelievable. Christie reminds me of Guiliani, who also had a lot of baggage going into a presidential race (though arguably more so than Christie). * this guy.

I think this is the heart of the question: Can Christie get through the primaries on his record and straight shooter image without having to go "full on right wing nut case" during the primaries?

If so, the dems will have a real fight, not just an "if you ignore all of the polling data this is going to be close" kind of fight.

Christie doesn't have baggage. He has spare tires.

I was wondering about that.

I remember something about him taking a helicopter to his kids little league game that was a bit . . . unaware? But are there bigger issues that would keep him off the national stage.

I thought to be in the fold for the Christian right you had to be an evangelical? Maybe a Catholic (which is weird enough), but I never thought before this year they'd nominate a Mormon.

I doubt that you will see a Mormon nominated again for a long while.

A. Mitt lost.

B. Barack Obama will not be running.

I believe that Christie knows that the GOP is not going to nominate a moderate under any imaginable circumstances.

Or if they do, the moderate has to play act as an extremist. Remember, Mitt Romney was about the most moderate of viable candidates in the GOP primary. (Compared to Perry, Santorum, Bachmann, Gingrich, etc.)

And Huntsman wasn't viable because he was too moderate.

Or at least not willing to play act at being an extremist in order to win the primary.

I think as for their actual policy positions and records, Romney was probably more moderate than Huntsman. In some ways, Romney was quite the progressive--especially with regard to healthcare reform.

Just noticed that my response was also modded out. It would seem to suggest that I was an active in the exchange. Just wanted to clarify that I wasn't. Now lets get back to the topic at hand.

My feeling with regard to Christie is that he may actually sway a lot of those like RandFan who became disillusioned with thee direction that the GOP had taken post first term Bush Jr. and began to vote Democrat.
I feel my narcissism kicking in again (hey mom, they are talking about me).

Kidding aside, yes, I could vote for Christie. I have been very impressed with the man's principles and I like how he can silence the silly rumors and innuendo.

If the GOP would elevate the likes of Christie and Huntsman I could be in their camp come next presidential election depending on the Democratic ticket.

A lot of Guiliani's "baggage" was his ex-wives (and not a very flattering way to refer to them.) Also, being a divorced Catholic didn't help.

The few of you who read my posts and don't assign team politics know that I am an extreme economic liberal who has no home in the current Republican Party.

And I'm a Fundamentalist Mormon with 12 wives......
