The "Do Not Open 0r Something Dreadful Will Happen" plot has been used and abused in a myriad of fairy tales on the 5 continents, long before Artificial Idiocy was invented.
One of my favorite is the opening episode in the Chinese classic "Water Margin", where an imperial bureaucrat opens an ancient sealed stele under which the 108 "stars of destiny" are emprisoned. Chaos ensues for the next 900+ pages.

I googled around a bit for grown-up reporting, and it seems that the Euphrates drying up has indeed revealed some buried stuff of archeological significance. What it hasn't revealed is all this crazy ◊◊◊◊ about chains and giant skeletons and leprechauns or whatever the nuts are on about.
Seems a nut heard about the legit findings and created some zany story and salted the mine with enough factual stuff to fool someone who wasn't paying much attention and loved them some confirmation bias.
