Car Bomb Found in Time Square

Those are kind of along the way ;)

Eta: In a roundabout way. Not in a Galileo way.

The more I read about this, the more I think we might have a "Stupid Criminal Of The Year" contender here, folks.

The White House is now hinting about an "international connection," so maybe this topic is in the right sub-forum...

What, you don't think that the new guy is going to blame a false-flag operation on foreign terrorists and lead us into endless wars? You are freaking naive.

I think you are right. In the best possible scenario, his device would have caused a car fire. 20 m-88 firecrackers contain only a gram of flash powder. At best they would light the gas cans on fire...and the resulting fire would eventually cause the propane tanks to "cook off"...assuming their overpressure relief valves were disabled. That's also assuming the fire dept didn't get there in time to put the fire out. While dangerous...not particularly deadly.

With just a little research on the web, our would-be bomber could have made a much more effective device. You can buy 8 pounds of gunpowder (used for reloading ammunition) for about a $100. You could make numerous pipe bombs..which can be made more deadly by adding additional projectiles. (like coating the outside of the pipe with ball bearings wrapped in duct tape) which would most definitely caused serious injuries or deaths.

If it was a false flag operation...the head of that department needs to be fired.

DavidJames,

Well, there's the Patriot Act which gives the government all sorts of additional surveillance powers; there's the fact that from 2003 to 2009 the government engaged in massive warrantless wiretapping, spying on who knows how many people illegally; there's the fact that the government has been performing aggressive datamining which requires that information be gathered about virtually everybody to be effective; more cameras have been placed all over the place since September 11th, which means less privacy in that regard as well; there's the Military Commissions Act of 2006 which gives the President or Secretary of Defense the power to declare even an American citizen to be an enemy combatant and lock him up forever, depriving him of his habeas corpus rights, torture him to the brink of death, employ information gained under torture against him in court, even in cases where a sentence of death is imposed, there is no method of appeal depriving him of the right of judicial review.

These are just a few of the rights that have been compromised over the past couple of years.

Serious question: What made you this way?

If he had gotten the gasoline to ignite it might have been bad. I have seen propane tanks catastrophically fail and explode if they are caught in an inferno. We had a 100 gallon tank that did this some years ago in an apartment complex fire and it produced quite a boom. Also, if this had happened, the dispersed non-explosive fertilizer would have made it a huge hazmat headache.

ive seen propane tanks blow up from a gun shot. it is a HUGE fireball....with lots of shrapnel probably.

if two of those blew up, igniting gasoline, that could have killed a lot of people.

crude? yes. deadly? yes.

Per NPR, aN approximate, but close, quote: "an SUV loaded with gasoline, propane tanks, fireworks, and fertilizer." Did this guy just assemble a car bomb from stuff he misheard on the internet? Yes, M80s can serve as detonators for secondary explosives like an oil-fertilizer bomb, and stuff like gasoline and propane tanks can make it worse, but there's a bloody PROCEDURE one must follow, and lighting it and losing your sweatshirt AIN'T IT.

Sweet Zombie Jesus, I knew guys in 6th grade who could build better bombs than that.

I'm thinking its some idiot with sudden jihad syndrome.

Had he positioned the M80 inside the gasoline container he would have had a potent fuel-air bomb.

The Oklahoma City bomb was gasoline and fertilizer, wasn´t it? (yeah, yeah, I know, it was built competently, not like this)

The stories I heard made it sound like he missed the point about ammonium nitrate and had it loaded with miracle gro (of course there's all kinds of misinformation bouncing around).

It was only a few blocks from the MTV building where Comedy Central is located. :tinfoil

KingMerv00,

Serious question: What made you this way?

You mean concerned about the erosion of civil-rights in America? The truth is, I don't think I would be all that concerned about civil rights if they weren't under constant assault since 2001.
