Cont: Cancel culture IRL Part 2

People other than the producers of The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling podcast, right?

So far, they've done a fairly decent job of showing the similarities between the right-wing cancellation efforts and the more recent (and arguably more potent) left-wing efforts.

That you had to cite an obscure podcast only reinforces Ryokan’s point.

And I like how you say “arguably more potent” when we all know you certainly won’t be making that argument because it would require something more from you than vague assertions.

We don't know if they were absent or not? We don't know who they were/are or where they were posting. I remember ridiculing the Christians on some format that's long since faded into oblivion eg. Myspace, Tribe.net. Twitter didn't show up until 2006, everybody was making Facebook pages for their pets in 2005, smartphones (and smartphone addiction) didn't really catch on until the iPhone in 2007.

So we could mention this crusade against Rowling as a historical note and include any recent right wing attacks against her but they're vastly overshadowed by today's attacks and considering we're discussing current events, that's what gets all the attention. As a for instance, I'm not getting very much when I go agooglin' for Christian criticisms of Hogwarts Legacy.

Three pages into a search and all I'm getting is this, What Would Jesus Do with Harry Potter? It looks like, nowadays, he'd probably read it.
Try searching for Christian extremists attacking D&D as a gateway into Black Magic and Satanism. This did and does extend into attacking other fantasy/horror based media as being dangerous and/or unholy

We could bring up the Satanic panic as well however these historical attacks by Christian extremists on people, activities, or ideas are rather out of place on a thread about current events. It's not like anybody's forgotten so if you have any recent Christians are trying to cancel X using the cancel culture format of online outrage mobs, then my all means, post them.

The crusade against Nike recent enough for you?

For some reason, not considered cancel culture.

ETA: And then there was the recent crusade against Disney. Again not considered cancel culture. In fact, many of the crusaders were known cancel culture-warriors.

This feels obligatory.

In other(topical) cancel culture news, a brouhaha has erupted on social media over Hershey’s Canada’s International Women’s Day campaign due to the inclusion of a transwoman.

So the complaints are all about the woman who looks very "mannish" and therefore is the transwoman. There are two things I think....

a) How do they know the person is a transwoman? They will assert that she has a penis, but I'd like to know how they know she has a penis? Based on her word that she has a penis? How do they know that none of the other woman in there are trans-women?

This pops up a lot when I watch youtube call-in shows that address trans issues, and the caller is like, "You aren't a woman, you are a man." or "I know you are a woman and not a man." The question is, how do you know? I see these internet call-in show hosts but I have never seen what is between their legs. So how do you know Shannon Q is a cis-woman and not a trans woman?

b) What would really be funny is if you found out that one they are complaining about was not actually trans and the trans woman in the ads was one that they couldn't even recognize.

Other than the big deal Fae Johnstone is making about being a trans activist we could probably research the other women in the campaign and look for any mention of transing. Next year they should do a campaign with all trans women.

I'm actually surprised that people are still buying this "chocolate" that tastes like vomit.

BURN THOSE BEATLES RECORDS YOU LUNATIC FUNDIES !!!

NOTE: For the benefit of Stout, who may not be old enough to remember this (I am, and I do):

There may not have been "social media" back then, but there was Christian Radio. It was two Christian broadcasters - Birmingham, Alabama DJ's Tommy Charles and Doug Layton of Radio Station WAQY who started all this, and it was spread through the network of churches, Christian Radio stations and the Klan.

Note the silence from that kind of people when it was the Christian Right who was trying, for years and quite fervently, to "cancel" Rowling. It only became a problem when "woke" people did it.

When Gina Carano was on "The Mandalorian" she was constantly attacked for being a symptom of the "feminizing" of Star Wars by Disney, with complaints about how she was there to be better than the male lead, make him look bad, and take the spotlight away from him. Once she was fired for her statements comparing being a Conservative to being a Jew in Nazi Germany, her opposition to masks during the pandemic, etc., the same people who had been attacking her suddenly loved her and put her on a pedestal, attacking Disney for firing her from the show they previously didn't want her on.

That's totally unrealistic!
I mean, there are at least three women at that table!
[/s]

We made fun of them then, and we make fun of them now.

(And my in-store group now contains ...let me think... zero women.
But there is one woman in my online group! Progress!)

I’ll brag that my parent/kid group was roughly half and half, depending on who made it that week.

Our IP group is majority female, the online/IP one is about 60/40.

I note some interest, but no surprise, that the Usual Suspects are silent regarding the BBC/Gary Lineker dispute.
