UNHCR: Climate Change and Displacement

Oh, good grief. Do you really believe there was no conflict in Africa and around Lake Chad before? The problem in that link is obviously the Islamic terrorists who made that man flee with his family. But, no, there's like this kryptonite fear of criticizing "peaceful" Muslims. So it's gotta be "climate change." As you may know, Lake Chad is just south of the Sahara. That's a desert, by the way. And the ever increasing demand of agriculture over the many decades has depleted it. Lake Chad: A Shrinking Lake in the Desert

Historically, Lake Chad has repeatedly expanded and shrunk. Fossils show that the lake dried up six times in the past 1,000 years. You can see crescent-shaped sand dunes distributed in the desert that were formed by strong winds. Remnants of sand dunes are visible in the north and northeast of the lake. Those wrinkle-shaped structures or small islands in the lake were formed when the lake dried up in the past.

The recent dramatic changes are considered to be caused by irrigation agriculture developed along the Chari River and cattle breeding around Lake Chad. Human activity is accelerating the shrinkage of Lake Chad.

I cannot believe people believe this. Just amazing.

I cannot believe people deny this. Just amazing.

There is no evidence of "climate change" causing refugees.

It has started already but so far it's a minor contributor, with wars, persecution and economic deprivation still the main causes of migration. It may be decades before it becomes the major cause. But it will. Mass migration is not a temporary issue which can be solved by economic and political improvements. Thanks to climate change it is going to be a continuing, and worsening, problem for the foreseeable future.

Nice to see your habit of starting a post with an abject lie about me hasn't changed.

Good work. If you ever decide to be honest, I might read the rest of your post.
What lie?
I gave the new government a pass mark for their time to date, and that now firms to a gold star as Chris Bishop doubles down in his efforts to bring house prices into line with reality: https://www.thepost.co.nz/politics/...et-out-radical-land-use-and-planning-reforms/

These measures are obvious, but Labour failed to implement any of them.

Lower house prices are the single biggest issue NZ has faced this century and I can now confirm that I'll be voting National next election

This is why I'm definitely a climate skeptic. "Climate change" has become akin to religion. Instead of accepting what would have been common-sense understanding of things a decade or so ago, this new religion obliges it adherents to shoehorn "climate change" into everything. If there's a hurricane - climate change! - if there's a wildfire - climate change! - if there's draught - climate change! - if there are economic migrants going to countries to exploit welfare benefits - climate change!

Yes. That's because climate change will have all those effects. Warming oceans trigger sea level rise due to thermal expansion, which increases the amount of energy in the atmosphere, which contributes to more severe weather events, including both droughts, which lead to wildfires, and hurricanes, which lead to flooding, and also makes coastal regions uninhabitable.

That you don't understand that climate change can have all of these various knock-on effects shows that you don't understand the science of climate at all. And that's why you deny it. It seems unlikely to you that it could do all these different things, but it isn't. It's established science. You don't understand the science, and that's why your personal incredulity fuels your denial.

Climate refugees from Tuvalu, one of the lowest-lying countries, have already started arriving in Australia. This isn't some vague nebulous future, this is now. Two of Tuvalu's nine coral atolls have already vanished under rising sea levels. The rest will probably disappear within 80 years.

Thank you. I was about to mention Tuvalu.

You certainly seem like an alarmist. Help me out, Art. If this truly was some existentialist threat, what the hell is this?

Fury over Cop29 private jet 'hypocrisy': How private plane arrivals have soared in Baku during climate summit as world leaders jet in to preach about global warming

It's very clear that "climate change" is used as a pretext to achieve other political goals. Otherwise, there wouldn't be the hostility towards nuclear power. Western countries are told they have have to live with less energy - and pay lots of guilt money - while countries like China keeping building coal burning plants. In my state the government passed a carbon text using this same "climate change" alarmism. It added $0.55 per gallon of gas and made everything more expensive. If it was really about "change change," you'd think the government would have a plan to monitor how much the carbon tax reduced emissions in the state. Nope. It just became a slush fund for special interests.

Tuvalu?

That's the Daily Mail stirring up ◊◊◊◊ like it always does. You can't possibly be trusting it as a source of reliable information, can you?

For the record:

Aviation contributes about 2.5% of global carbon emissions - not negligible, but tiny.
China is the biggest investor in renewable energy on the planet, and owns the world's largest wind farm, which is visible from space.
Supply chain issues due to Covid, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and unrest in the Middle East are pushing up fuel prices.
Opposition to a carbon tax is political, and driven by fearmongering articles like the one you just posted.

You need better sources. The ones you are using suck balls.

Those are not refugees. It's a visa program allowing adults from Tuvalu to work in Australia - and access all the benefits. It's capped at 280 a year. My understanding is that 5,000 people applied for the lottery; nearly half the population. Which is understandable. If you lived on a small atoll island in the middle of the Pacific, you'd probably jump at the chance to leave, too. But there's no evidence that these people want to leave because of "climate change." It's obviously economic. Which is why, of course, they capped it. Otherwise, everyone would probably leave. Yet, only people 18+ could apply. So, apparently, "climate change" doesn't affect children. This "climate refugee" narrative is entirely manufactured. Though I have give it to the Tuvaluan government; they played the virtual-signaling smugness of the Australian government to get a great economic deal for their people.

You miss the point, entirely. If there really was concern that carbon emissions are an existential crisis, those lecturing us about how we need to change our ways would behave as it there really was an existential crisis. But they don't. Like this obsenity:

‘They Are Working Harder’: John Kerry Defends Climate Activists Who Fly Private to Davos

Asked in a recent interview about the hypocrisy displayed by climate activists who fly private to the annual World Economic Forum conference in Davos, Switzerland, John Kerry defended the elite travelers, insisting that they take pains to “offset” their outsized carbon footprints.

“Well, they actually – I’ve talked to them about it. They offset,” the former Secretary of State told Yahoo News in an interview that was published on Friday afternoon.

“They buy offsets, they offset. And they are working harder than most people I know to be able to try to effect this transition,”

Why can't they do Zoom meeting like the the rest of us? Because they're better than us plebs.

And China may be investing in renewables. Why not? They sell that stuff to the machoistic West while insuring that their own energy production is reliable: China keeps building mega coal projects

In what way is the internet not real?
Its not real in that most if not all internet forums/social media platforms a self-selected group. So, spending a lot of time online will tend to give folks a false impression of what most other people who do not spend a lot of time online or focusing on politics think. Anyone remember that story from, IDK, about 10 years ago, It's actually a very small number of folks that actually talk politics on twitter and even smaller group of those people that talk the most.

The entire internet is likely similar. That's bound to give an impression of society that isn't quite right. It would be like thinking, IDK, like thinking folks in an internet group devoted to Taylor Swift were a representative sample of society, probably not even a representative sample of Taylor Swift fans.
