I've identified the source of your confusion.
(1) The first lists reported in the news were compiled by the news services. They weren't accurate and after some investigation were updated.
(2) All the hijackers used multiple aliases and Arabic-English translation of names has it's own problems. For instance;
Osama bin Laden or Usama bin Laden. Goggle will show that both are common.

The first lists were compiled from lists supplied by the airline operators. are you trying to tell me that these people didn't know who was on their planes?
