Buzz lightyear and the JREF Challenge

The second set of pictures is basalt, similar to (if not actually) the Devils Tower (National Monument) in Wyoming, a formation known as an igneous intrusion. http://www.nps.gov/deto/naturescience/index.htm shows a pictures of the side of the tower. There s a slide show on that page to walk you through the process, if you have the time to wait for the server.

I can't imagine that the explanation of the first is harder than water/wind erosion of a sandstone outcropping. There may have been balanced rocks there at some point in the past which finally tumbled over. http://www.neara.org/Moore/balancedrocks.htm

Thanks for setting me straight slimething.
I now realise what a ridiculous ass I have been.

Imagine being so stupid as to make a "paranormal" claim then backing it up with physical evidence. What could I have been thinking.

In future I will limit my discussion to Silvia Brown, 9/11 and bigfoot.:o

I must have missed the part of your post where you actually made a paranormal claim.

Those rocks were made by God. Since, you cant disprove the existence of God, therefore God exists. Therefore, God made those rocks, along with the white feces on the rocks. Here is the equation:

x=God
R= rocks
God exists = 45
White feces on picture one = 76

If x + r = the formation of rocks and x + r + 45 + 76 = God exists.

Anyone that doesn't believe this is delusional.

And the answer to life, the universe and everything is 42...

45-42=3

THEREFORE you have just proved the Trinity! Catholicism FTW!

I think the 3rd photo may just be an impact fracture i.e. something hitting the rock face. I think we need more imput from buzz on this one. Or kittens.

Ya know, that was my original answer, but I had a divine message from God telling me otherwise!

Inadequate field geologists' nightmare.

I think I shall find some pics for buzz to explain: if, of course, he/she is willing?

You have some pics of similar formations Naughtyhippo?

I am particularly looking for areas of sandstone similar to that in the first pic of the second post.

Are you in Scotland?

And don't worry about doing the kitten thing I have "been there, done that".;)

Pretty simple paranormal claim, if you want to call it that, Mashuna.

My theory is that, like the phosphate deposits of Nauru and the limestone of the Napier Range, areas of the earths surface, referred to as sandstone, are the byproduct of an organism's life cycle.

This theory follows fairly well the legends of the Australian Aborigines who believe that the landforms of this continent where shaped by a giant serpent.

The above pics are examples of these areas.

No, but I think that you're trying to backdoor something that should go back to your original thread. You're trying to show "proof" of your paranormal theory.

Nah, Little 10 Toes, not trying to show proof of my "paranormal theory".

It's just me stirring good old Tricky.
I love the way he stutters when it all gets too much for him.

Occasionally stuffy old geologists can do with a prod. Its the only way to tell if they are dead or merely asleep.

Are you being serious? I honestly don't know.

Just in case...

...the gensis of rocks in the above pictures need not invoke the life cycles of any organism(s). The first set are easly explained through lithification and erosion. Similar balanced clasts can often be found on a much smaller scale in eroding conglomerates or debris flow deposits. If you pay attention, you'll notice just how common these are.

The second set-- at least the first picture-- look like pillow basalts. Of course, from pictures alone we can't really say whether these are even igneous or sedimentary, but they look like some nice pillows. If these are igneous, and you can identify "chilled margins", then you have some very nice pillows there. If they are not igneous, then there are likely a number of sedimnetalogical processes that could explain their structure. I'm not a sedimentalogist, so my suggestion of "drying mud" may be worthless.

Moreover, some sandstones ARE the byproducts of the life cycles of various critters. When this is the case, the sandstones are said to be "bioturbated". Bioturbated sandstones have a "gnarled up" or "crusty" look and are often filled with cylinderical lithified burrows. Other sandstones are lithified by calcic cements from the skeletons of various sea critters, while others yet are filled with fragments of skeletal material.

...or passed out drunk.

I respectfully submit that any geologist worth their salt would never have passed out from drinking.

Here's one of the simpler screwed up bits of Scottish geology. Seerpents so powerful they churned up stone whilst making a comfy hollow to sleep in?
