Buzz lightyear and the JREF Challenge

There is an old saying " you are what you think you are " so if you believe you are a soulless slave in a material world , thats what you are .

Is that from 'Old Nutbar's Book of Idiot Platitudes'?

No, it's a regular one amongst new-agers, and although it initially starts as a positive life-force thing, it is often rolled out to explain to people why the remote reiki, hands-on-healing, distance praying, etc is not making a difference to their illnesses. You see, it is not the fault of the 'healer' you don't get better, it is because "you are what you think you are" and so you are re-enforcing negatives, and therefore preventing the healing from occurring.

It's a line of thought I particularly loathe.

Thats an interesting line of thought , Chillzero .
There seems to be a fair amount of medical evidence that stress is a contributor to maladies in humans .
But then that is beyond our controll ,isnt it,we are just victims of fate aren't we .

That's all the reference I could find, so I wasn't far off.

Absolutely, it's also the excuse of those who tell us, for a modest investment of course, how we can heal ourselves with positive thinking or prayer.

You say interesting, I say abusive. I've lived through it.

And? So what?
Anyway, telling someone they are in control of their situation / illness - when they clearly aren't - only adds to the stress, and makes matters worse.

But then that is beyond our controll ,isnt it,we are just victims of fate aren't we .

No.

Indeed.
Even without the modest investment, it is a still a terrible way to handle someone in distress.

It may come as a surprise to you Flange but if you want to explore the occult world , money is the last thing you want on your mind .

What a convenient cop-out for not taking the challenge.

So donate the money to charity. Be the one who shook science's very foundation and ushered a new era of human knowledge.

You are locked in a hard miserable existance by a cage of greed and belief systems . Paul is a good example of this .

Nonbelief is not a belief.

There is an old saying " you are what you think you are " so if you believe you are a soulless slave in a material world , thats what you are .

The saying is incorrect. Thoughts do not alter reality. Unless you can win that million, that is.

Personally ,I like to believe that I am a god living in paradise , and that seems to be what is happening .

Well, you are some piece of work, mister. Woo-hoo.

Howdy Belz , nice of you to enter into this litte party . A bit of new blood is needed , we have been getting a bit incestuous lately . Cute avatar .

As for thoughts altering reality :
Two people in the same place seeing the same thing , one loves what he sees the other hates it , one picks up the beauty, one only sees the ugly . The only difference is in their minds .
Their realities are different because of their minds .

And I'm working on a protocol for the " challenge " . That is what this thread is supposed to be about, when we can stay on track . I'm hoping to find a geologist amongst this mire of misfits . Know one ?

I should have guessed you knew your rocks , Desertyeti , from the " I hate igneous rocks " line .
The " rocks " that I have been studying are supposed to be sedimentary , so you should have some constructive comments to add to this " discussion " .

To show that the formations are not igneous I attatch a pic of a cross section of one of the sites . Here a road has been cut through the " rock" to a depth of about five meters . The vertical lines that you can see are bore holes from the road work . As you can see the formation sits in a depression but also rises above the surrounding surface on either sides .
The upper surface has the " reptile skin " patterns .

So can we rule out igneous ?

Cute ? I'm going to have to change it, then. ;)

Uh-huh. I was talking about objective reality. The one we can, you know, all observe and agree on.

And I'm working on a protocol for the " challenge "

Why the scare quotes ?

Very nice channel deposit there!
The upper "skin" is most likely polygonal synaresis. Long story short, it occurs where sediments like mud, silt, or clay are de-watered through chemical dessication. Very regular, very conformable cracks occur and are often confused for fossils. They're called "pseudofossils" and there's lots of information available out there about them and synaresis in general.
Happy geologizing!

Jas has the lead again!

It's a head-to-he.., um, head-to-boo.., er, head-to-cl.., whatever: It's a close race again.

BOO LUKE T.! GO JAS!

LOL

I missed her when I looked at the score - 1 ahead and a few hours left...

But what made that amazing black and white pattern??

So straight and smooth, cutting through the land. Remarkable photo!

Thanks for your comments desertyeti .
A couple of things to consider are that the polygong are composed of pure silicon crystals , no clay or mud . Also they fold downwards at the edges following the curve of the underlying structure . It they were once part of a semi liquid solution they would have been contained in a basin and the drying process would have left them curved upwards at the edges .
