While it remains to be seen if the story is a total fabrication or not, the issue isn't about hypocritical infidelity:

I wonder how well Boehner's zero-tolerance pledge regarding corruption will hold up when it comes out that several hundred paper-making jobs were lost in his district and he refused to do anything about it at the same time he was sleeping with a lobbyist for the printing industry that was very happy to get their cheap paper from China.

Gotta give it to Lyons though! She's one hell of a lobbyist!

The LBJ quote is pretty clearly about lobbyists, not your political rivals. Why would your political rival give you all those things? Why would you be expected to vote for your political rivals goal (which is why voting against them would take strength of will)?

Most of our politicians in soliciting our votes represent themselves as competent, upstanding, god fearing, law abiding, and trustworthy.

We care when we find out that the person we voted for is actually a drunken, sleazebag, philandering, self-serving, lying, cheating ^#**weasel.

The private life paints a picture contrary to the image we elected.

Because some politicians run on family values, or preservation of marriage as pretext to ban gay marriage, or attempted to impeach Bill Clinton, or whatever, and so if they do something like this, they lose credibility. Whereas if they don't mention stuff like this, it doesn't matter as much.
