I'm always reminded by this of an early "study" on the psychology of crime that concluded that pick-pockets attended hangings because of some vicarious need to be proxy punished; to see the death that came to criminals and know that they have escaped it for another day.
It wasn't until crime began to be studied as an occupation, and criminals interviewed in that light, they realized a public hanging meant a big crowd of people all staring in one direction.
