Border Security and Illegal Immigration

I have been an American all my life - which is longer than I like to think about, but still not as long as I hope to achieve - and have never seen anyone over the age of 5 do this.

I'm sorry to say that I've seen it far too often; once, in particular, a busload of elderly well-to-do American tourists in quite a posh Highland hotel who all sat, cut up all their food at the beginning, planted elbows on the table and then ate their dinner with only the fork. This is what under 5s do in Europe. Not grown-ups.

I also have a slightly dilapidated copy of Fodors France here somewhere which has a specific warning that the French consider it impolite to do such a thing and then suggests that it's "one of those funny French things" or words to that effect.

From my experience, it is not a habit shared by Canadians. It's pretty much just you guys. And toddlers.

You can tell that this is a bugbear of mine. A bit like the way the some southern Europeans don't understand the concepts of "rounds" during a night in the pub......

I think Architect is explaining that he has seen many americans take up the knife and fork, cut up their steak into pieces, then put down the knife, and take up the pieces of now already cut steak, one by one and eat them...knife having already done its entire job before any food is eaten.

Bingo.

Even throwing shrimp on barbies, we use both knife AND fork.

Mmmm! Canadian bacon! Smothered in maple syrup!

There is a running joke about Deep Fried Mars Bars here in Scotland, but it is widely considered to be an urban myth. Unlike favourite post-pub snacks such as Chips & Cheese, Chips & Curry Sauce, or Chips & Curry Sauce & Cheese.

'Tis no myth! Plenty of chip shops in England sell battered Mars bars. There's a chippie near my university that sells a full range of deep fried chocolate bars, including Mars, Bounty and Snickers.

Being something of a calorie counter, I've never had the courage to try one myself.

In my personal experience there appears to be a widespread tendancy amongst many Americans, particularly younger ones, to cut up all of their food and then eat it with just the fork. Like small children do. In Europe as a whole, and places such as the Antipodes, this is considered very poor manners indeed.

It is?

Is there anything that the French don't find impolite?

Speaking as an antipod, we have deep fried mars bars and ice cream, amongst other things, though I've never tried them.

I would find it odd to see someone eating as you described, but certainly not rude or ill-mannered.

urban legend has it that the people of france do not find leaving ones armpits hairy impolite, regardless of sex...but it could just be a rumor...lol

A common conspiracy theory for quite some months now is that the US-Mexico borders are wider open on purpose, to bring in Mexican immigrants and dismantle the American culture over time, as to make it accept a NAU in a soon future.

Rubbish.

The Ku Klux Klan say something similar about the Black people, and Hitler said something along those lines as well about the Jewish people.

IMO it's a very possible theory. It's very unjustifiable to have a wide open border especially in a time of global terrorism *ahem*.

Well, the border is large because of geology.

If anything, it's a sign that radical muslims aren't really, well, you know, trying to kill us.

Take 9/11 for an example of some radical Muslims who want to kill us.

Here are other examples:

Yes it is a conspiracy theory. Alex Jones spends a hell lot of time talking about it.

Word of advice: never listen to what Alex Jones says.

I it has also been said that the Brits all have crooked teeth, the Aussies toilets work in reverse, and Canadian men have incredibly long........legs.

Ach wheesht; I used to have an Aussie girlfriend and I've spent time in the Antipodese. NZ, for example, is one of the countries closest to the UK culturally that I've ever come across!! You're just stirring it! :p

it has also been said that the Brits all have crooked politicians, the Aussies toilets are the source of the Neighbours scripts, and Canadian men have incredibly long........winters.

Corrected for accuracy!

ps the "E" key on this damned keyboard is playing up, so excuse any omitted letters.....

I'm not sure, did he have much impact on the natives?

Climate change got them after a couple of generations, if I recall correctly. I'd have to ask a mate of mine who teaches archaeology up at Lillybank Gardens and has an interest in this.

Can we overall agree that illegal immigration hurts the country at least? You don't seem to realise that waves of 3rd country population cannot and will not help the economy of a sovereign 1st world country...
Rubbish.

So the reason why the border has and still is open for years, is because it's 2 miles long? The US is, in your opinion, not able to at least fence the whole thing?

I gotta say I disagree, because fencing the whole thing, though it might cost more to repair and all, can be a project done by the millions at most. If you think of it as a $4/feet, the basic cost for a 2000 mile fence would be about 42 million. Adding that to transportation and installation, maybe 100 million at most then.

Now you may say I'm taking out numbers out of my behind, but the overral idea is the same. It ain't cost much. But it isn't being done. Illegals come in by the millions per year now and nothing is being done. The DOHS (or the USBP, forgot which one, doesnt matter in the end) was given 1.2 billion to build a fence in late '06 and they spent it on a "virtual fence" instead.

Now please do tell me it isn't possible to build a frigging awesome fence for 1.2 billion. thats like, $113 per feet. ya could probably even build some Taco Bells along the way. Yet it wa not done

Now what's the reason for that? Government idiocy yet again?
